Group Break: Upper Deck Decades '70s: Packs 7, 8, 9, and 10

The Upper Deck Decades box sure is colorful!  Here are two more chromatic packs of cards for you.

Pack 7:
16.  Ruppert Jones - Mariners

66.  Ron Fairly - Nationals
108.  Jack Clark - Giants
133.  Reggie Jackson - Yankees
159.  Thurman Munson - Yankees

The Yankees have done pretty well this break - this pack marks their eighth pack win overall.  To put that into perspective, the Reds are in second with a mere four pack wins (and probably would only have one pack win if it weren't for my Cincy bias)!  However, the Yankees almost lost this pack just because of Ruppert Jones' awesome 70s facial hair...

Pack 8:
42.  Chris Chambliss - Yankees
68.  Gary Carter - Nationals
109.  Keith Hernandez - Cardinals
135.  Gaylord Perry - Padres
AR6.  The Arms Race:  J.R. Richard - Astros

The Arms Race insert cards are seeded 1:14 packs - however this one is extra nice because of the Holy Yellow Pinstripes that Richards is sporting.  Good Lord those uniforms are so ugly they are stylish (in a blind guy picking out clothes sort of way).  Pack win Astros (which now ties them with the Reds for second place in total pack wins I might add).

Pack 9:
8.  Sal Bando - Athletics
34.  Bert Blyleven - Twins

60.  Ferguson Jenkins - Cubs
116.  Harmon Killebrew - Twins
161.  Joe Morgan - Reds

As much as I'd love to give this pack win to the Reds, I have to be the bigger man and hand it to the Twins instead.  A Blyleven and Killebrew in the same pack is a pretty hard combination to beat!

Pack 10:
1.  Nolan Ryan - Angels
 88.  Joe Morgan - Reds
95.  Bob Horner - Braves
180.  Willie Stargell - Pirates
AR10.  The Arms Race:  Phil Niekro - Braves

For the second time in this post, Joe Morgan fails to deliver the Reds a pack win.  This time, he was soundly beaten by the Braves duo of Horner and the Niekro insert.

At this point, we are basically about 50% of the way through the group break.  If I had to pick some "winning" teams, I'd have to pick the Yankees (8 pack wins plus 9 parallels/inserts/serially numbered cards) as the clear winner.  After them, it's probably a toss up between the Cardinals, Astros, and either the Blue Jays or Rockies (depending if you prefer serially numbered cards or inserts).  In the battle of base cards, once again the Yankees are leading the pack but the Tigers, Pirates, Reds, Phillies, and Cubs are all within two cards (if my highly technical hash marks on a piece of paper are correct).

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the worst teams so far appear to be the Indians (0 pack wins, 0 inserts), Marlins (1 pack win, 0 inserts), Brewers (0 pack wins, second fewest total cards), and the Dodgers (0 pack wins, 0 inserts).  Of those teams, both the Indians and Dodgers are surprises since I usually seem to pull a lot of cards of both of those teams.

The good news for everyone is that there are still a bunch of packs waiting to be busted (and we haven't found our promised hit from the Upper Deck box yet either).  Keep checking in throughout the weekend (and next week) for the conclusion of the break!
