Theme Week: Women of Ginter '11: Sanya Richards

Welcome to another entry in the Women of Ginter '11 series - today we take a look at Sanya Richards who is a Summer Games Track & Field Gold Medalist.

According to Richards' Ginter card bio:
Richards, a Jamaican-born track and field competitor, is the fastest female 400-meter runner in United States history.  The national record-holder at 48.70 seconds, she won a gold medal in the event at the 2009 World Championships and a bronze at the 2008 Beijing Summer Games.  As part of a 500-meter relay team, Richards added Golds in Beijing and Athens (2004), and at three World Championships.
In other words, Richards is pretty fast - especially for an American woman.

Note:  Richards actually goes by Sanya Richards-Ross (she's married to New York Giants cornerback Aaron Ross).

Compared to the first two women entrants for the theme week, Richards resume doesn't seem quite as impressive based on her Topps card bio.  However, a little bit of research shows exactly why Topps probably chose to include Richards in the set with a tagline "The World's Champions."  Richards is a two-time World Outdoor champion, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, and a World Cup champion (also two times).  She holds plenty of collegiate awards and honors as well making her well-suited for a card in the Ginter set.

On a more personal note, Richards is involved with the Sanya Richards Fast Track Program which combines sports with literacy and numeracy to help out young children in her native Jamaica.  She was also named Visa's Humanitarian of the Year according to her personal website.

Speaking of her website, Richards has quite the website.  She posts videos and plenty of other tidbits of information for her fans (including a "Don't Worry, I'm Not Retiring" video).  She's also active on Twitter with over 12,000 followers.

Unlike many of the other women featured in the Ginter set, Richards doesn't appear to try to use overt sexuality and/or modeling to further her career.  She'd simply rather run really, really fast and then help children in her native homeland.  And for that, I salute her and congratulate her on her inclusion in the Allen & Ginter set.
