Yesterday's pack breaks were quite awesome - we ended up with three hits including a nice serially numbered autograph card. Will today offer up the same sort of success? Let's find out starting with the UD Patch Collection box.
Pack 4:
16. Johnny Damon - Red Sox
26. Frank Thomas - White Sox
67. Mike Piazza - Mets
77. Derek Jeter - Yankees
103. Scott Rolen - Phillies
Wow, I complain about boring packs so I ought to mention when a pack happens to be chock full 'o stars... You'd be hard pressed to pick five bigger players than those in Pack #4. Oh sure, you can quibble about the inclusion of Rolen amongst the likes of Thomas and Jeter but still, that's a pretty fearsome fivesome. As for the pack winner, since all five players are good I went with which player had the best photo. The winner? Mike Piazza and the Mets.
Pack 5:
41. Ivan Rodriguez - Marlins
58. Doug Mientkiewicz - Twins
84. Jim Thome - Phillies
87. Jason Kendall - Pirates
107. Rocco Baldelli - Rays
The pack wrappers state that short printed cards are seeded 1:4 packs but I couldn't find a checklist online that stated what the short printed cards were. Through five packs, I haven't seen any cards that jump out at me as a "short print"...perhaps they are like the first year or two of Ginter where random base cards were actually short prints? Or, perhaps my sample size of only 5 packs isn't good enough yet. This pack featured a pair of catchers, so going with the theme from the previous pack let's award the win to the best photo - this time it's Jason Kendall and the Pirates!
Pack 6:
3. Robby Hammock - Diamondbacks
60. Corey Koskie - Twins
63. Vladimir Guerrero - Expos
94. Edgardo Alfonso - Giants
113. Kevin Mench - Rangers
This time the pack winner is clear - it's gotta be Vlad and the Expos. No one else is close to the talent of Vlad in this pack!
Pack 7:
2. Troy Glaus - Angels
31. Ken Griffey Jr. - Reds
52. Adrian Beltre - Dodgers
69. Al Leiter - Mets
114. Juan Gonzalez - Rangers
136. Hall of Fame Patch: Ted Williams - Red Sox
To be honest, I didn't know what to expect when I decided to order the 2003 UD Patch Collection box and use it as part of the group break. I've gotta say, if all the patches are like this one it should be a fun box! Personally, I'd love to acquire the Reds Hall of Fame players patch cards, though storing these is going to be a bit tough seeing how thick they are! The Hall of Fame patches are seeded 1:40 packs (and are one of the tougher patch types to pull)!
Speaking of the Reds, they haven't had a good showing in the break at all so far - and the first chance for Cincinnati to sneak out a pack win is completely destroyed by the Red Sox pulling the patch card. Congrats Boston - better luck next time Cincy.
And with that, we end this morning's group break post. Amazingly, in the last four group break posts, we've uncovered four hits. Will our good luck continue later today? Stay tuned!
