Now that I've completed hundreds of trades over the last few years (all thanks to the blog), it's sort of rare for someone to send me a card that I've never even seen (or heard of the set before). While rare, thanks to David over at E rayhahn, rayhahn, I can absolutely say it's not impossible! I sent David a pile of various Twins base and inserts a few weeks (or maybe more?) ago - and in return, David sent me a few awesome additions for my collection!
First, a pair of Starline cards of Chris Sabo.
Although both cards are from the same set (which I had never heard of before today), they feature different front photos, different card numbers, and a different write-up on the back. The set was sponsored by Coca-Cola and features 40 total cards (from 1990). Seeing as how 1990 was the year the Reds won the World Series, these are some extra nice cards for my collection.
Next, David sent me an oversized Materialistic card from the 2003 Fleer Focus Jersey Edition set.
The card features a giant swatch of jersey material in which Fleer says "you have just received a very special materialistic card featuring an image of Adam Dunn printed on jersey fabric." I guess Fleer bought a bunch of blank jerseys and printed up oversized cards on them. Certainly different - and a nice addition to my Reds collection to be sure!
Finally, the cream of the crop (or at least the highlight of the trade):
That's right - it's a relic card of none other than Barry Larkin. And it's not any old relic either...it's a piece of Larkin's baseball glove (numbered 161 out of 375)! I love that Fleer went all out adding in relics of all sorts of things (including shoes, gloves, and bases) so this is a spectacular card in my eyes. When (and if) I ever do a second round of the Barry Larkin Experiment with the second 100 cards in my collection, I'll expect this card to finish quite high in the final standings!
Thanks for all the great cards David! And, as always, if anyone else wants to trade - check out my want list and make an offer!
