Group Break 3: Who Want Four More Packs of Donruss Studio '03?

Welcome to a Monday.  You probably have to go to work today - but I don't!  One of the benefits of working for a college is that I get a spring break.  Even better, the weather in central Pennsylvania is supposed to be relatively spring like all week - highly unusual for spring break!

With all that said, I'm in a good mood so let's bust open four packs of 2003 Donruss Studio...with a running commentary on each and every card no less.  Enjoy.

Pack 7:
43.  Runelvys Hernandez - Royals
In a word, who?
61.  Roger Clemens - Yankees
In a word, steriods.
127.  Juan Encarnacion - Marlins
In a hyphenated phrase, not-Miami-Marlins.
130.  Jason Lane - Astros

In a word, train!
180.  Barry Bonds - Giants
In an allegation, steriods.
SG-9:  Spirit of the Game:  Derek Jeter - Yankees (#0183/1250)

The Yankees strike it rich again - a nice numbered card of the current Bronx Bomber captain, Mr. Jeter himself.  I scanned the back of the card just so you could see the numbering...you can only have so many Yankee scans on a non-Yankee blog!

Pack 8:
23.  Paul Konerko - White Sox

I'm guessing all of the photos for the set were taken in front of a green screen seeing as how all the White Sox photos have the exact same guy with the white hat and yellow jacket in the lower left corner.
52.  Alfonso Soriano - Yankees
Soriano is the 16th Yankee base card of the break which is now 3 more than the next closest team (the Braves).
81.  Dewon Brazelton - Rays
Brazelton started two games for the Rays in 2002 going 0-1 and giving up 7 runs on 12 hits (plus 5 strike outs and a whopping 6 walks).  He should be glad Donruss has a MLB license at this point in history or else he probably wouldn't have had an official Major League card.
163.  Pat Burrell - Phillies
The back of Burrell's card credits his work with Mike Schmidt during 2002 Spring Training for his 2002 regular season results (37 HR, 116 RBI).
166.  Kevin Millwood - Phillies
It's a Phillies hot pack!  Millwood ended up with the Phillies in 2003 thanks to a trade with the Braves that netted Atlanta catcher Johnny Estrada.
169.  Jason Kendall - Pirates
The Pirates might be one of the worst teams over the past three decades but at least they have a nice ballpark.  As for Kendall, his card states that he struck out more than once in a game exactly one time in 2002.  I like useless statistics like that!

Pack 9:
34.  Carlos Pena - Tigers
The movie Moneyball really made Carlos Pena look like a total tool.  I wonder if he's really like that or if it was more of a way to make Billy Beane look even smarter for the movies?
51.  Torii Hunter - Twins
Considering that Hunter played most of his career for a team I found largely irrelevant (the Twins), I always liked Torii for some unknown reason.
102.  Chipper Jones - Braves
My run of pulling Chipper Jones cards continues.  Seriously, anyone who ends up with the Braves in my various group breaks can pretty much bank on ending up with a pile of Chipper Jones cards (for better or worse)!
174.  Oliver Perez - Padres
Oliver had a 1.63 ERA in Class A and Class AA ball in 2002...in the majors?  He ended '02 with an ERA of 3.50.  Anyone think he missed the minors?  Probably not...
177.  Sean Burroughs - Padres
Our second consecutive pack featuring 1/3 of the cards from the same team.  This time it's the Padres who get the double dose of love.
SG-27.  Spirit of the Game:  Hideo Nomo - Dodgers (#0321/1250)

This one's for you Night Owl - a Nomo serially numbered card from the same set as the Derek Jeter card at the top of the post.

Pack 10:
11.  Freddy Sanchez - Red Sox
Freddy was a solid player for both the Red Sox and later the Pirates.  You wouldn't know that from his 2002 totals though:  In his 12 games (16 at bats), Sanche managed a mere 3 hits for a .188 batting average.  Ouch.
48.  Doug Mientkiewicz - Twins
You'd think I would be able to spell his last name by now without looking at the card three different times...you'd think that, but you'd be wrong.
65.  Eric Chavez - Athletics
The back of Chavez's card talks about him playing third base rather shallow thanks to his quick reflexes.  It's little tidbits like that that I wish would be on more baseball cards - give us some insight into player that we can't glean on our own from staring at the statistics.
123.  Jeff Baker - Rockies

The Rockies have one of the better backgrounds for this set - you can't beat a night sky with the scoreboard lit up.  Good stuff Colorado.
140.  Shawn Green - Dodgers

On the other hand, the Dodgers have one of the lamest stadium shots...nothing but a bunch of empty stands and some American flags.  Yawn!
178.  Brian Lawrence - Padres
The Padres stadium shot shows the outside of Qualcomm Stadium.  It's not exactly exciting, but it is sort of neat to see the outside of the various stadiums so I can live with the photo background.

That's four more packs down!  The group break is moving along nice...I hope you all are having fun!  So far, the Donruss Studio box has provided us with 5 serially numbered cards (plus 2 other inserts).  Of the five serially numbers, three are out of 1250, one is out of 750, and the fifth was out of a mere 25.  Not bad at all if you ask me!
