A TCDB Surprise Card from mpdillard25!

Delivery Time! Cards for No Particular Reason from Heartbreaking Cards of Staggering Genius

Last semester, I gave the 'ol graduate school thing an honest effort but unfortunately, 15,000 miles and one semester later I had to give up on the idea.  During that time, besides being miserable, I did receive a few packages of cards (mostly cards sent "just because" by people as I didn't have much time for trading - or sleeping).  Now that I've finally cleared off my desk of recent trade packages - it's time to go way back and look at one of the envelopes from that dark semester in my life!

The envelope was courtesy of Matt over at Heartbreaking Cards of Staggering Genius.  Matt's got a tremendous blog (check it out if you haven't) and is a great trader.  He seems to prefer to send stuff out of the blue - which I admit is a lot of fun.  By my records, we have exchanged a total of twelve packages of cards - only two of which were part of a pre-arranged trade!

Here's what Matt sent my way:

First, he found a nice way to get rid of Cincinnati Reds Bowman cards!  He must have read one of my (many) posts where I mention refusing to buy most Bowman products but willing to acquire the Reds via trades.  I think the following are all from the "regular" Bowman set, but honestly, I don't even know if there is such a thing as a "regular" Bowman set.  For all I know they are from Bowman Rookies and a Few Stars or something.

The cards came in three flavors - ok, technically they all taste vaguely like cardboard but you know what I mean.  First, we have the established guys with little red curvy things at the bottom of the card.  Accents you might call them, that is, if those red thingys were home decor items.

Next, we have the green apple flavored cards:

They appear to be the rookies seeing as how they each have the little MLB rookie card logo on them.  I'm really astute like that.

Finally, we have the golden card (wait, that's a year too soon).

I don't really know - it must be a parallel of some sort?  It's not numbered like the Topps gold parallels of the flagship set.  Or, maybe all players who strike out 8 bazillion times in a season get the gold border treatment.  Really, it could be that.

Besides the Bowman cards (which were all almost 100% new to my collection and so I appreciate them - even if they are Bowman), Matt also threw in a few packs of 1991 ProSet Official Fixture Cards.

I had no idea what to expect when I opened the pack (besides soccer, er futball) of course.  I kind of like the idea of opening "Official Fixture Cards"...makes me think it's a pack of cards sponsored by Lowes.

To my surprise, the cards actually looked pretty nice (in an early 90s kind of way) except there was wayyyy too much short short action going on.  The cards didn't feature the women's league after all.

For example, here's some short shorts:

And some shorter shorts...

And some more...

And then we have the "guy coming out of sauna" photo:

And the grand 'ol team from England - suits and all:

And finally, your requisite Abercrombie and Fitch model practice shoot card.

Thanks for all the cards Matt - they were appreciated - and lots of fun to open...even if it did take me 6+ months to get a post together!  Finally, if anyone else would like to trade - I'm almost caught up in old trade packages so check out my want list and make me an offer!
