Group Break #5: 2000 Pacific Aurora - Packs 7, 8, and 9

The group break is cruising right along as we are now entering the main portion of the break - the newness factor has worn off but there is still plenty of hope and intrigue remaining in the various boxes!  Speaking of hope, I keep hoping we pull one of the 150 Tony Gwynn autographs from the Pacific Aurora box!  Even without the auto, the box has been pretty good so far - let's see what packs 7-9 bring us.

Pack 7:
31.  Carlos Lee - White Sox

59.  Alex Gonzalez - Marlins
62.  Jeff Bagwell - Astros
99.  Tino Martinez - Yankees
117.  Kevin Young - Pirates
144.  Ivan Rodriguez - Rangers

Moving right along...

Pack 8:
9.  Matt Williams
60.  Mike Lowell - Marlins
100.  Mariano Rivera - Yankees
119.  J.D. Drew - Cardinals
133.  Ken Griffey Jr. - Mariners

10.  Pennant Fever:  Jeff Bagwell - Astros

That's a much better pack!  The Griffey base card is great - and the Astros insert card is also quite nice.  This was more what I had in mind when I selected a Pacific box for the group break!

Pack 9:
1.  Darin Erstad - Angels
61.  Preston Wilson - Marlins
103.  Jason Giambi - Athletics
118.  Rick Ankiel - Cardinals
121.  Mark McGwire - Cardinals
127.  Phil Nevin - Padres

A great pack for the Cardinals - I decided to scan the Ankiel just because it said "rookie" on it.  That would have been a possible chase card back in '00!

Additional note:  Sometimes during group breaks I still find myself actually sorting the various boxes by card number as I open the cards.  Lately, I've been doing that and then picking a box or two to write a review of for my blog and having the cards in numerical order makes it much easier to bust out a review post before mailing off all the cards to the various group break participants.  Anyhow, the point of this is that when I put the cards in order I realized that we now have two Mark McGwire cards (number 121) but each card has a different background.  The card on the left (with the red background) is the "base" card - the card on the right is some sort of variation I guess.

Looking through the stack, we also have the variation version (looking for the striped background) of Mo Vaughn of the Angels (but no regular version of Vaughn, at least not yet).

  1. In checking Beckett, there is a base and a pinstripes version that books for 2.5x the base but there is not one for every card.
