Group Break #5: 2002 Piece of the Game - Pack 4

The 2002 Playoff Piece of the Game box features a total of 6 packs - each with one hit inside.  This is the fourth such pack.

Pack 4:
5.  Roberto Alomar - Mets
26.  Mike Mussina - Yankees

27.  Jeff Bagwell - Astros
29.  Curt Schilling - Diamondbacks
POG-3.  Albert Pujols - Cardinals

The Pujols Relic features a game-used base.  According to the back of the card, the base is from the July 5th game (2001) between the Cardinals and Brewers!

I love the Playoff shows a picture of the actual article where the relic piece originated AND I love that they tell you the actual game in which the relic was used.  On July 5th, 2001, Albert Pujols went 0-5 with 1 strikeout.  The Cardinals beat the Brewers though by a score of 5-2.  In fact, although Pujols didn't get a hit, St. Louis rapped out 13 hits including which means plenty of Cardinals had a chance to step on the base!

As for the group break, the Cardinals are killing it right now - that's St. Louis' third relic of the break...and while the other two were both of J.D. Drew, a Pujols relic puts them over the top for sure!

  1. I agree with you on every point. All Topps does with their relic cards is put a blurb on the back that states the relic piece isn't from any particular game, season, year or something to that degree. Kudos to Playoff for taking that extra step to show the item and tell us the game from which the card was made from.

  2. Three relics in one break is outstanding. Congrats to whomever was wise enough to choose the Cardinals.
