Box Breaker: 2005 UD Past Time Pennants (Packs 1 - 3)

It's time to begin the breaking of my 2005 Upper Deck Past Time Pennants box.  Here are the first three packs!

Pack 1:

1.  Al Kaline
6.  Bob Feller
12.  Bucky Dent
64.  Phil Niekro
Autograph:  WH.  Willie Horton

One pack, one autograph!  How's that for not building the suspense at all?  As you can see from the pack scan, this is a gorgeous little set (I do mean little though, the base set is only 90 cards which is the only downside to the set that I can see).  I won't be scanning full packs all the time, but I did want to give you a feel for the set.  I like the mix of black and white photos along with color shots though I know that probably bothers some of you...

As for my autograph, I can't say I know much about Willie Horton.  Like my college students, I turned to Google to help me out and the first result was this convict.  I'm guessing that's not the Horton that signed my card.  Moving on, I later found the "real" Willie Horton - a player who actually had his number retired by the Detroit Tigers in 2000.

Pack 2:

5.  Billy Williams
29.  Frank Howard
65.  Phil Rizzuto

68.  Rico Petrocelli
86.  Whitey Ford

Two Yankees out of five cards is a bummer, but that seems to be the norm in an all legends set.  I guess you can't hold it against New York for having so many great players throughout their history.  Actually, I take that back.  I can hold it against New York.  Even so, the Rizzuto card is the best in the pack...what a great "old timey" looking shot.  Love it!

Pack 3:

18.  Dave Parker

44.  Joe DiMaggio
48.  Juan Marichal
72.  Rod Carew
84.  Wade Boggs

Whaddya know, we are getting better.  Only one Yankee in this pack!  It was tough to choose a "best card" in this pack - I went with a tie mostly because "respect the beard."

Three packs (plus a box topper) in to the box and I'm already quite happy.  Of course, there are 17 packs (plus one more autograph) remaining to be discovered so my happiness should continue to grow!  Stay tuned for more.

  1. I busted 3 boxes of this stuff when I got back into the hobby. I really like this set. I have a Don Gullett auto from this set I'll trade you for the Willie Horton you pulled.
