Welcome back to another edition of the 2005 UD Past Time Pennants Countdown. Today, we take a look at the final three cards to miss out on being part of the top third of the set. Who just missed the cut? Let's find out:
#33: Luis Tiant
This card has it all including crisp colors (sky, grass, glove) and awesome jersey (wool Boston apparel). Unfortunately for Tiant, the bar for breaking into the top third of the set is incredibly high...so a card that might easily be a top ten card in most sets languishes in the #33 spot instead.
#32: Willie Stargell
A posed shot to be sure, but it works for me. I think if I were to redo my picks for the set today, I'd flip-flop the Stargell and Tiant (I love the Tiant card) but since I'm going with my initial selections things stay as they are. I've got to maintain my integrity after all.
#31: Duke Snider
Did you have this pegged as a top 10 card? I did at first...and then it kept falling, falling, and falling until eventually settling in as the best card of the second third of the set. I think if that guy with the white shirt in the background had instead been a baseball, then this card would have been top ten material for sure.
