We are past the midpoint of November - and with it, the midpoint of our countdown. Personally, today is a good day because A) It's Sunday and B) I'm still 30 years old.
Tomorrow?
Not so much. It'll be Monday (boo!) and I'll no longer be 30. I'm getting old.
Speaking of old, here's the next set of three players - all of which had their primes prior to my birth!
#42: Warren Spahn
According to the back of his card, Spahn's best years were 1950, 53, 54, 57, and 61. I wouldn't be a figment in anyone's imagination until 1982 which means I had no chance to see one of the best pitcher's of all-time pitch. I am lucky enough, however, to own a card of him - and it's a gorgeous looking card! The top 45 cards of this set are truly wonderful (as you'll see over the next couple of weeks)!
#41: Ernie Banks
Banks career basically coincided with Spahn's, so again, I didn't get to see him play. As for the card, this is another beauty - the black and white image really works here. Even better than the image, the striped socks!!
#40: Tony Perez
Tony happens to make the top 40, but only by the skin on his teeth. In a surprise to me, one of Perez's five best years was 1980 when he played for the Red Sox. I don't think I knew that he ever went over to Boston...you would have thought anyone who played in that classic 1975 World Series would never want to switch teams (or at the very least, Reds players wouldn't want to switch over to the losing side of the contest)!
