As the post title says, we have finally made it to the Top 10 best cards in the 2005 Upper Deck Past Time Pennants set. Oh sure, technically today we will only get to see #10 on the list (along with almost-but-not-quite-top-ten cards #11 and #12). Even so, I hope you enjoy - and be sure to visit the blog tomorrow when we'll have the first post with pure Top 10 cards (in between eating lots of turkey of course).
#12: Bob Gibson
I guess I really wanted to make sure that Cardinals were shut out of the top 10, even subconsciously! Unfortunately, it didn't quite work as one St. Louis player did manage to make the top 10 (spoiler alert: you'll see that player today).
#11: Don Newcombe
This is one of those cards that makes the viewer wonder what exactly Newcombe was saying to his New York counterpart (since the Dodgers were in Brooklyn at the time). It's a great shot though - and certainly would be top 5 material in almost any other set. Alas, the competition was fierce in this set so Newcombe finds himself the final player cut en route to the top 10!
#10: Bruce Sutter
Sutter makes the top 10 ahead of the likes of Gibson and Newcombe mostly because it looks like the photographer went into Sutter's home, ripped him out of bed, threw a baby blue jersey on him, then snapped a quick picture. It's hilarious - and simple enough to warrant a spot in the top 10.
Who else made the top 10? Well, at this point I suppose you could go through the checklist and figure it out - but can you figure out the order that I placed the remaining nine cards? I'm guessing not since there are 9! = 9x8x7x6x5x4x3x2x1 ways for me to have ordered such a group. And yeah - it's an off day for me at work so there's my math lesson for the day. You are welcome world.

Comments
I feel intimidated by Bob Gibson, even in black and white.
ReplyDeleteThese posts are great, love this set! Thanks for pointing them out to me, I don't think I was aware of your blog back then but I know what I'm doing to kill time until the World Series starts!
