Barry Larkin
Year: 1991
Brand: Line Drive Collect-a-Books
Card number: 31
In the early '90, I remember seeing (or rather hearing) about the Collect-a-Books line. A few of my buddies had some from the football release but I don't recall ever seeing a baseball Collect-a-Book "card." In fact, there's a good reason for that as the Collect-a-Books line for baseball lasted exactly two seasons (with 1991 being the final season). The set consists of 36 players, some current (for the time) and a bunch of retired stars (including Billy Williams, Yogi Berra, and Thurman Munson). If you are interested, you can find the full checklist for the set here.
Although the Collect-a-Books line never really caught on, I think they are kind of cool. At the very least, they are different which is appreciated (especially now given how we only have Topps producing the same stuff year in and year out). I wouldn't mind seeing something like Collect-a-Books return - maybe with an autographed parallel version for the "mojo hounds" out there.
As far as I'm concerned, the best part of the book is the comic drawing - though the entire thing is pretty neat. I should mention that the card really is a book - I had to make multiple scans (one per "page") which I then turned into a single image for the post (don't worry, I didn't slice up my only copy of Larkin's Collect-a-Book)!
