Barry Larkin Collection 261: 1996 Fleer Circa - #31 - Boss Insert

Barry Larkin
Year:  1996
Brand:  Circa
Insert set:  Boss
Card number:  31

The 1996 Circa set was a failed high-end attempt that used a plethora of bright colors and team logos (as you can see with the Barry Larkin base card from the set).  The inserts were similar in the sense that there were still bright colors and team logos (though not quite as crazy in terms of design as the base set).  In fact, had Fleer opted to use the Boss design for the base set and the regular base design for some type of insert, this set would have at least felt a bit more high end.  And I mean felt in the literal sense because this card is actually embossed (hence the Boss name I guess)!

Overall, I like this card because it does feel different (literally) than much of the mid-90s products. On the other hand, the set is decidedly cheap in terms of card stock and so it's no surprise to me that the set flopped as a high-end offering.  As for the inserts, the Boss cards were seeded 1:6 packs (there are also numbered Rave cards - seeded 1:60 packs and Access inserts seeded 1:12 packs).  The Rave cards are numbered out of 150 and serve as a full parallel of the 200 card set.  As of the time of my writing this post, I do not own the Larkin Rave parallel.  The Access cards are the other true insert and there happens to be a Barry Larkin card in the set as well - and again, as of the time of this writing I do not own it either!

Maybe it'd be worth me picking up a box of Circa at some point!
