Barry Larkin Collection 352: 1987 Topps Tiffany - #648

Barry Larkin
Year:  1987
Brand:  Topps Tiffany
Card number:  648

The 1987 Topps set is certainly an iconic set (which means Larkin's rookie card is also iconic to an extent).  Unfortunately, the 1987 Topps set was also woefully overproduced.  So much so, in fact, that you can still find unopened packs of 1987 Topps in repack boxes sold today!  The Topps Tiffany set from 1987, on the other hand, is comparatively rare.  In fact, according to baseballcardpedia, there were "only" 30,000 Topps Tiffany sets created in 1987.

As for the card itself, I ended up grabbing it off of eBay (hence the reason it is graded).  I will probably free the card from the confines of the plastic cage soon - after all, I greatly prefer all my cards in 9-pocket binder pages so I can flip the pages and enjoy them whenever I wish!  I have to give Joe F. credit for convincing me to simply "go for it" and acquire this card for my own collection.  After all, how can I call myself a Larkin collector if I didn't even own one of his iconic rookie cards?!

  1. What?!! Cut open a graded card? well, if that's what you need to do to match the rest of your collection, that's what you have to do. Might be worth the $15 in grading down the drain. Hey, you know what I do with a case like this? Use a color photograph of the card as the 'holding place' in the binder, and keep that baby in the slab. I do this for relics and such that are too thick for the 9 pockets also. Yep, just a picture of the Kenner starting lineup cards sit in the binder since I have not removed them from the toy package. Kind of hokey, but it works.
Sweet card, glad you went for it.
