Barry Larkin Collection 369: 1996 Pinnacle Aficionado - #38

Barry Larkin
Year:  1996
Brand:  Pinnacle Aficionado
Card number:  38

The Pinnacle Aficionado set yet another forgettable set under the Pinnacle umbrella.  In fact, I would argue that the front design of the Aficionado card set is one of the worst designs in all of the mid-90s.  That creepy image of half of Larkin's noggin?  It's a bumpy textured, foily mess.  The entire card is begging for a bit of color and pop, but instead all you get is a monochromatic color scheme.  Heck, even the Reds' team logo on the back of the card is in black and white.  Compounding the problems of the card design is the way Barry's statistics are situated.  That chart is darn near impossible to read - and the smattering of logos underneath the stats box is annoying (and why is only the Pinnacle logo in color)!?

It's certainly no surprise to me that Pinnacle didn't keep the Aficionado line for long.  It's boring, ugly, and basically it has no redeeming qualities.  All that said, I am happy to have yet another Barry Larkin card - I guess they can't all be artistic masterpieces!
