Barry Larkin
Year: 1992
Brand: Bowman
Subset: USA Olympic Team
Card number: 694
In 1992, Barry Larkin had a pair of cards in the Bowman set. The first was his regular base card while the second card celebrated Larkin's time on the 1984 US Olympic team. You can't necessarily tell from the scan but the front of Larkin's card is completely framed by metallic gold foil. It's definitely gaudy, and I'd be lying if I said it was anything other than distracting! I guess the idea was to make this subset card "feel" special but I don't think it worked.
On the other hand, for all the effort Topps put into making the front of the card feel unique, the back of the card is one of the most boring card backs imaginable. You don't get any stats, nor do you get any sort of write up...instead you are "treated" to a logo of the United States Baseball Federation with a 1984 Alumni banner over top of it.
While this isn't my favorite Larkin card ever, it does have one redeeming factor and that's the great photograph on the card front! Seriously, if you can overlook the gold border and ignore the card back, that photo alone makes this card a great addition to my Barry Larkin binder!

Even more bonus points on the photo for being at Wrigley! Too bad the ivy isn't in full bloom though.
