Barry Larkin Collection 418: 1991 Jumbo California Sunflower Seeds - #16

Barry Larkin
Year:  1991
Brand:  Jumbo California Sunflower Seeds
Card number:  16

This is one of the cards that I acquired via a recent eBay purchase.  I've decided to try and focus on more of Barry's earlier cards in an effort to try and acquire all the cards from the beginning of Larkin's career (before things like one-of-ones came into existence which makes 100% collecting impossible in the later years).  As such, I need to track down a number of early year Larkin cards including quite a few oddball releases!

One oddball that I no longer need is this 1991 Jumbo California Sunflower Seeds card.  The Sunflower line of cards actually spans three years (1990 - 1992) but only the 1991 set has a card for Barry Larkin in it.  That's ok because I can't say that I particularly care for the design of the card - or the image.  In fact, I think it's the image which is so poor that makes me think less of this card.  I understand that the card manufacture had to erase all team logos (unlicensed and all) but did they have to use a photo of Barry swinging a weighted warm-up bat?  And he's not really even swinging it, he's more "holding it and looking at the wrong photographer."  Ugh.

At least the back of the card gives full statistics plus a nice write-up on Larkin's career up to that point.  The giant "limited edition" is pretty vague...and seeing how you can land this card for about a buck on eBay, I don't think the edition was limited by anything more than whatever the printing press could churn out!

All said, I'm happy to have another card from early in Barry's career in my collection - and until I saw this card for sale I didn't even know that Jumbo California Sunflower Seeds made baseball cards...never mind three year's worth of cards!

See, obsessive collecting teaches you things!

  1. This is the first I've heard of these sets, I'll have to go back and check if they're are any Cubs on the checklists. Also, it's funny how pretty much everything that tells you its valuable (i.e. marked as "limited edition" or "collector's edition") is, ironically, a pretty good bet to be worthless.

  2. I am guessing the oddballs are the Sunflower, Milk Bone, and Duracell. If that Duracell is new to you, I feel bad because I have like 30 of those. All very nice.
