Barry Larkin Collection 427: 1997 New Pinnacle - #116

Barry Larkin
Year:  1997
Brand:  New Pinnacle
Card number:  116

Calling your card set "New Pinnacle" has to be one of the dumbest names that I've heard yet.  As it turns out, New Pinnacle was basically Pinnacle's way of avoiding issuing a series 2 for their flagship set.  Rather than use the same design and include new players, Pinnacle scrapped their set and built a brand new set called "New Pinnacle."  And yes, there were plenty of repeat players.  The other claim to fame for the New Pinnacle set?  It was the first set to include printing plates.

I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

As for the Larkin card itself, the front is actually fairly solid.  I like the full-bleed photography and it's a nice action play.  The back isn't as good (I hate the font at the top and I had having the card number on the left of the card - especially when it would have worked so much better in the red box on the right hand side)!  I also will never been a fan of vertical statistics...and the poor team logo is so small I think I missed it the first time I looked at the card.

Needless to say, New Pinnacle isn't really all it's cracked up to be...and luckily for collectors, New Pinnacle didn't last long enough to cause any sort of stir (other than the aforementioned printing plates which are now a player collector's nightmare).  Good riddance New Pinnacle, good riddance.

I'll answer it for you - printing plates are a bad thing.
