Barry Larkin & Jim Thome
Year: 1997
Brand: Donruss
Subset: Interleague Showdown
Card number: 441
The Interleague Showdown subset features two players on the front (in this case Larkin and Jim Thome) who were supposed to be interleague foes. The back of the card didn't have a whole lot to say about interleague play as it was just starting up...and the whole Ohio Cup (played for by the Indians and Reds of course) is as much of a joke now than it ever was. Plus, now that there is at least one interleague series every week, I don't think there is any sort of mystique or wonder attached to the idea. Still, you can't fault 1997 Donruss for celebrating what was brand new for baseball...even if that idea was thoroughly beaten into the ground less than twenty years later!
