A TCDB Surprise Card from mpdillard25!

Group Break: 2016 Panini Donruss: The Time When Play at the Plate Made Out Like a Bandit.

It's official, after this post we will have reached the halfway point of the 2016 Panini Donruss box.  I am curious - what do all of you think of the 2016 Panini offering?

For my money, it's been a fun box to rip.  The cards "feel" good in hand.  I also like much of the photography - you can often forget that there are no logos (especially on the 1982 card versions).  On the other hand, until Panini does get the rights to logos, the cards will always feel at least a little "second tier," even if the product is solid otherwise.

So what do you think?  While you decide, here are the next pair of packs.

Pack 11:
131.  Yordano Ventura - Royals
123.  Corey Kluber - Indians
135.  Chris Heston - Giants
189.  Craig Biggio - Astros
182.  George Brett - Royals
The Prospects:  11.  Jose Berrios - Twins

Nice to see "lesser" teams like the Twins get a little insert love.
1982 Base:  29.  Eric Hosmer - Royals

What a great photo.  I'm telling you, the 1982 Base set would be a nice looking set to put together.
Black border parallel:  129.  Adrian Beltre - Rangers (#178/199)

I know that Play at the Plate will be happy with this pull for his Rangers.  The black border looks pretty sharp - and numbered out of 199 is nothing to sneeze at.  Very nice way to end pack 11.

Pack 12:
180.  Frank Thomas - White Sox
120.  Mark Melancon - Pirates
127.  Carlos Martinez - Cardinals
94.  Collin McHugh - Astros
116.  Curtis Granderson - Mets
Rated Rookie:  36.  Stephen Piscotty - Cardinals

I believe the actual set has the Rated Rookies (along with the Diamond Kings) as part of the base set.  Still, I'm going to scan most of those as if they were of particular interest to group break participants (because I'm guessing that they are)!
1982 Base:  24.  Miguel Cabrera - Tigers

Congrats to Play at the Plate again - he has the Tigers as a randomized team.
Elite Dominator:  24.  Salvador Perez - Royals (#713/999)

Another serially numbered card - this one goes to Play at the Plate as well!  I guess when you end up with eight different teams in a group break you deserve to get some pretty cool stuff!  I'll guess that PatP likes the Beltre best from today's packs...but this Perez card is pretty sweet (and pretty shiny)!

As usual, there is plenty more to come...including the second half of this box (which has another two hits remaining as a reminder).  Stay tuned.

  2. Re: 2016 Donruss. I'll say this- in a year where Topps Flagship has underwhelmed to the point where it feels like a chore to pick up packs of the stuff, Donruss is definitely a lot more attractive, especially since they've ironed out some of the kinks. Plus, I love the '82D inserts- possibly better than base.
