Allen & Ginter 2016: The Maeda / Urias Controversy.

Yesterday I began the process of ripping my first 2016 Allen & Ginter box.  And then earlier today I had a chance to rip pack #2.  Of course, I'm way too impatient to settle for only pack today so let's rip another!

Box 1 - Pack 3:

13.  Kevin Gausman
36.  Alex Rodriguez
117.  Robin Yount
120.  Kenta Maeda
131.  Brooks Robinson
280.  Paul O'Neil
340.  Roberto Osuna (short print)

Regular mini:  142.  Jake Arrieta

I first read about the drama involving card #120 over on Night Owl's blog - it turns out there are two versions of card #120 (both Dodgers).  The common version is the Maeda rookie that I pulled.  There is also a super short print #120 (Julio Urias).  I would have liked to pull the Urias instead given what people are selling them for on eBay right now.

On the other hand, as a set collector the question is:  Do I consider both versions of card #120 part of the base set?  I do consider the "regular" short prints part of the base set...how about the super short prints?

I have no idea what to think of it...maybe if I pull myself the Urias I'll give it more thought!

Comments

  1. I always consider short prints apart of a master set. Base set to me is always just plain base cards. But that's just me

  2. One representation of every consecutive number is a complete set. Gimmicky short print variations are a (rarely pulled) bonus at best.
