A TCDB Surprise Card from mpdillard25!

Crackin' Open an Old Box of Cards!

I've had this box of 1999 Pacific cards sitting in my desk drawer for about two years now...I think it is high time that I rip it open!  The '99 Pacific set is one of the sets that I decided to try and collect when I went through my Great Reorganization process for the year 1999.  Part of the reason that I decided to go for the set was that I knew I had a full box of the stuff just waiting to be ripped.  Over the next few weeks, I plan to post each pack on the blog - along with some scans because who doesn't love the old Pacific stuff?!

The box contains 36 packs - with 10 cards per pack so it's a healthy box full of cards.  It should be noted that the set itself is 450 cards in size (with another 50 "variation" cards that I may or may not go after depending on how many I pull in the box).

This is a hobby box, so it does contain the possibility of pulling some of the cool hobby only sets.  According to the box, the odds for various inserts are as follows:

  • Platinum Blue Parallel:  1:73
  • Dynagon Dimaond:  4:37
  • Titanium Diamond Variation:  99 serial-numbered sets
  • Team Checklists:  2:37
  • Gold Crown Die-Cuts:  1:37
  • Cramer's Choice Awards:  299 serial-numbered sets
  • Timelines:  199 serial-numbered sets

I know that Barry Larkin has both a regular base card, a platinum blue parallel, and a team checklist card.  I certainly hope to pull the regular base card from the box - but wouldn't it also be cool to pull one of the other, rarer Larkins?!

A guy can hope at least.  Let's get ripping!

Pack 1:
9.  Dave Hollins
First card of the box always gets a scan, even if it is an Angel.
37.  Marty Malloy
45.  Roberto Alomar
65.  Nomar Garciaparra
108.  Craig Wilson
143.  Edgardo Clemente

There are 50 variations in the set which are all head shots.  I believe that this Clemente is one such variation card.

167.  Brian Hunter
230.  Jeromy Burnitz
309.  Ryan Christianson
359.  Luis Ordaz

Nothing super exciting in the first pack out of the box - but I did need most of the base cards so that's good enough for me (after all, that's the real reason I'm busting this box finally)!

  1. How do you have the restraint to keep a box for two years without opening it!?

  2. I do that with unopened LEGO sets that I buy as well. My wife thinks I'm crazy (and she might be right)!

I was a fan of Pacific and I really liked the 1999 set.

According to my data, Clemente *is* a Portrait variation. These are the card numbers which (again, according to my source), have both action and portrait versions:
    12, 22, 27, 28, 32, 36, 37, 40, 45, 49, 54, 57, 60, 65, 66, 70, 87, 106, 134, 136, 141, 142, 143, 144, 146, 154, 184, 186, 196, 204, 250, 270, 286, 293, 294, 296, 305, 308, 311, 322, 352, 368, 378, 387, 396, 423, 429, 435, 436, 440

Eighteen years after the fact I'm still not sure if the portraits are SP's, or if it's effectively a 500 card set with 50 cards having the same number as 50 other cards.

  5. I went crazy over Pacific products back in the day. I really enjoyed their different foil colored parallels. I hope you pull a Platinum Blue Larkin for your collection.

  6. I haven't yet opened the Triple Play pack you sent from the last group break. But a whole box? I could never.

  7. It is a nice looking set. *Sigh* Another "JUNK" set I will have to try to remember to start chasing.
