LEGO and Baseball: Another Guest Post!

Editor's note:  Today's post is a guest post written once again by the good folks over at Ninja Brick LEGO News.  They offered to pen a pair of posts tying LEGO and baseball together (you can see their first baseball LEGO post here).

LEGO Baseball Minifigures & Future Expectations

With the launch of Series 18 of the Collectible LEGO Minifigure Series this April, there may be some of you wondering when we'll next see another Baseball minifig. In this article, we'll analyse the previous two baseball player minifigures and whether we can expect anymore.

Firstly, let's identify how LEGO choose their minifigures. Each series showcases themes unlikely to appear in larger sets. Minifigures can be individually themed within movies, sports, history, and popular culture. Therefore, an entire series does not have to be based around baseball or sports for a baseball minifigure to feature. Take a look at the Polybag front covers below and you will see a mix of themes.

Series 3 Baseball Player (Batter)

The first-ever LEGO Baseball minifigure launched in January, 2011. This was part of the Series 3 collection, numbered 8803. There were 16 minifigures to collect, which is standard for a series. The Series 3 baseball player plays for a team named the 'Clutchers' and includes a brown baseball bat, a red and white Clutchers kit and Clutchers hat, abbreviated 'C'. This was one of the more popular minifigures from Series 3.

Series 10 Baseball Player (Fielder)

The second-ever baseball minfigure was released in May, 2013, as part of Series 10 (71001). This series contained 17 minifigures due to LEGO releasing an extra rare Mr. Gold character, with only 5,000 available. This LEGO baseball fielder plays for a team named the 'Stackers' which clearly references the LEGO brick. The fielder comes with a blue and white 'S' print cap, a brown baseball glove accessory and a blue and grey Stackers kit. This minifigure was fairly popular, though not as popular as the Series 3 minifig. This was possibly due to the rarity differences of each minifigure and novelty of the Series 3 player being the first ever baseball minifigure.

Will we see another LEGO Baseball Minifig?

Looking at the Series 3 and 10 baseball minifigures, we can see a two and a half year gap between the releases. To date, it's nearly been 5 years since the release of a baseball minifigure. LEGO have already released a batting and fielding player, but they could release more minfigures by position; a pitcher and catcher for example, or other personnel such as the head coach or umpire. In our opinion these additions would be more suitable as an entire set, rather than individual minifigures, but either would be great! Looking at the Baseball MOC sets previously posted, we can only imagine how amazing a full set would look.

  1. An umpire figure would be cool especially if it had a detachable mask and chest pad
