My Next Project(s): Frankenset (x3)!

For the past couple of years, my New Year's Resolutions has included discussion about working on a Frankenset or two.  For those that don't know, the term Frankenset has been used to describe a custom set of cards made up of baseball cards from various official sets.  Each person who makes a Frankenset gets to set their own custom rules which is what I aim to do with today's post.

First up, I've been (very slowly) doing a complete collection overhaul and reorganization.  As part of that reorganization, I've given up on collecting a large number of sets - but sometimes those sets have a few cards that I really like which is why I've decided to do a Frankenset.

Actually, two Frankensets with maybe a third.

Here are my rules:

Non-Reds Frankenset:

  • No cards from sets that I've collected.
  • Try to limit the number of cards from the same set on each page.
  • Try to limit the number of cards of the same player on each page.
  • Attempt to complete a 792 card set (knowing that the last 200 cards or so will be the toughest to fill)

Reds Frankenset:

  • No cards from sets that I've collected.
  • No Barry Larkin cards (his cards go in their own binders).
  • No Ken Griffey Jr., Sean Casey, Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips, Eric Davis, Adam Dunn, Johnny Bench, Chris Sabo, Jay Bruce, Jose Rijo, or Billy Hamilton cards (those are all "mini PC" guys of mine but some of them will end up going in the set eventually because I cannot possibly collect that many different players on their own).
  • Try to have as many different Reds represented in the set as possible.
  • Try to limit the number of cards from the same set on each page.
  • Try to limit the number of cards of the same player on each page.
  • Attempt to complete a 792 card set.

Mini Franksenset:

  • No minis from mini sets that I've collected.
  • Minis must fit in the 15 pocket pages (so tobacco era sized minis only).
  • No inserts.
  • Probably try for a 350 card mini set.

While that's a lot of stuff to work on, I will say that I have an entire shelf of cards that are sitting and waiting to be sorted and considered for one of the three Frankensets.
Lots and lots of cards to sort through here!

If all goes well, you'll hear more about my progress on these sets over the next few weeks (months?).  I like the idea of being able to consistently update the sets as time goes on - it'll make for those random group breaks that I join occasionally to be more worthwhile as well!

Sounds like a lot of work - but a lot of fun. Good luck with it! Once you post specific wants I'll check my collection and try to help you out.

I still have a few extra 1999 Pacific Private Stock mini's that you're welcome to. I also have some duplicate Golden Age mini's, which will fit into pages, but they're pretty snug.

I'd love to build a Frankenset myself one day. Probably one of the A's and Padres. Sadly... I've got way too much on my plate right now. One day though. Best of luck on your three sets!
