Over Christmas break, I finally sat down and forced myself to go through the many, many boxes and stacks of cards that I had set aside for the past 5+ years. The piles and piles of cards were all for possible inclusion in my Reds Frankenset - a set that has nearly become mythical around Nachos Grande's casa seeing as how I've talked about it for years but never once delivered anything close to a set!
That all changed this week though as I sorted (and sorted and sorted) cards out by number and then started adding them to my binder. I decided to do a 800 card Reds Frankenset with the following rules and goals:
1. No cards from sets that I have collected (or am currently trying to collect). Thus, you won't find any Allen & Ginter cards in the binder.
2. No inserts or parallels (if I could determine that card was an insert or parallel off to a different pile it went)!
3. No cards of players that I am either collecting or thinking about collecting. At the moment, that means no Larkin, Griffey Jr., Rose, Dunn, Casey, Phillips, Sabo, Votto, Bruce, Bench, Davis, Rijo, Foster, Roberts, Seaver, Griffey Sr., Kluszeewski, or Senzel.
4. Try to limit the same player or set on each page.
5. Emphasis on great photos or card design, with some thought to including rookie cards.
6. Try to maintain a nice mix of players throughout the binder.
7. Exactly one card for each number 1 - 800, Reds only.
8. Try to avoid cards with more than one player on it (exception Reds' team cards)
9. Try to avoid cards with more than one team represented.
While I do still have a few more Reds to sort out and see if they make it into the Frankenset, I am proud to say that I've actually made a full binder of cards. Well, not entirely full as there are a bunch of numbers for which I had exactly zero Reds to fill the spot. As of my 12/28/18 update, those numbers are:
213, 290, 318, 320, 323, 324, 346, 348, 359, 363, 365, 373, 376, 378, 380, 381, 382, 383, 385, 389, 390, 391, 400, 403, 406, 411, 423, 437, 438, 441, 445, 447, 451, 455, 456, 459, 460, 461, 464, 470, 477, 479, 480, 482, 483, 485, 486, 487, 489, 490, 491, 492, 494, 497, 498, 500, 501, 503, 505, 507, 510, 514, 515, 516, 517, 519, 520, 527, 529, 532, 541, 543, 545, 546, 548, 553, 555, 557, 558, 561, 562, 563, 565, 567, 572, 578, 578, 579, 583, 584, 587, 588, 590, 591, 592, 602, 608, 612, 614, 615, 616, 620, 621, 622, 623, 641, 643, 644, 651, 652, 653, 654, 655, 656, 659, 661, 663, 665, 668, 670, 672, 674, 675, 676, 677, 678, 680, 681, 682, 685, 687, 689, 690, 691, 692, 693, 695, 696, 697, 699, 700, 701, 702, 703, 705, 706, 707, 710, 711, 713, 720721, 723, 725, 726, 727, 728, 729, 730, 731, 732, 733, 734, 735, 737, 738, 739, 740, 741, 742, 745, 746, 747, 748, 749, 750, 752, 753, 754 755, 756, 757, 758, 759, 761, 762, 763, 764, 765, 766, 767, 768, 769, 770, 771, 772, 773, 774, 775, 777, 779, 780, 782, 784, 786, 787, 789, 790, 791, 792, 793, 794, 795, 796, 798, 799, 800
Obviously, when making a Frankenset the first 200 cards or so have many, many options for each slot number but by the time you get into the 600s you pretty much take whatever you can get!
I do think that I'll show off my Reds Frankenset at some point, perhaps even page by page. However, I probably won't do that any time in the immediate future because my scanner officially died the week before Christmas (this is why I haven't posted about some of the trades that have arrived at my house as well). Hopefully I can get a new scanner soon - and then I should be back up and running like normal.
For now though, I think I'll leaf through that Frankenset one more time.

ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing the pages!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! This is a project I've thought about doing with the A's (and possibly the SJ Sharks). My guess is it'll happen during my first year of retirement (in 2 decades or so).
