TCDB Monday: It's a Monster, Folks!

My Next Box Break

Over the past couple of years, I have bought a few boxes from eBay (or other sources) for sets that I was planning on completing.  One such box was the 1992 Upper Deck box that I recently opened.  Today, it's time to start the second such box that I've set aside:  a hobby box 1999 Fleer Sports Illustrated.

I love the Fleer SI line of cards, even if that particular line is only a couple of years old.  As for the 1999 set, heading into the box break I'm missing a whole lot of cards - in fact, here's my full want list at the moment:
1999 Fleer Sports Illustrated Wants:Base:  3, 6, 7, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, 25, 26, 28, 29, 31, 32, 35, 42, 43, 46, 47, 50, 58, 59, 85, 88, 97, 98, 100, 110, 111, 125, 131, 134, 139, 146, 151, 154, 161, 163, 170, 175, 179
Headliners:  1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23
Obviously, I'm hoping that by breaking this box I will be able to whittle that list down to a much more manageable number of cards.  The Headliner inserts are seeded 1:4 packs according to the box so unless I do amazingly well with the box (in terms of duplicates) I may actually have to give up on that particular insert set.  That's a judgment call that I don't have to make right now...but I am fully committed to getting my want list under 100 sets by the end of 2019 and so it's time to finish off a bunch of sets or cut them loose!

The box has 24 packs with 6 cards per pack so this should be a faster break than the 1992 Upper Deck box!  As usual, I'll spread out my pack break posts so as not to have Sports Illustrated overload for anyone - and at the end I'll update my want list and see how close I end up to finishing off the set.

Let's get it started!

Pack 1:
108.  Sammy Sosa

117.  Andrew Jones
165.  Damion Easley
58.  Jay Payton, Mike Kinkade, Masato Yoshii (needed it)

12.  Larry Walker, Bernie Williams (needed it)

63.  Jonathan Johnson, Rob Sasser, Scott Sheldon

Six cards in a pack, I needed two in the first pack.  By my count, I needed 42 base cards heading into the pack break.  If I can get two new base cards in each pack, I'l have the base set completed before I get to the last few packs.  A guy can hope, right?

Pack 2:
123.  Mark McGwire

174.  Tom Glavine
172.  Cliff Floyd
43.  Mitch Meluskey, Mike Grzanich, Daryle Ward (needed it)

29.  Tony Clark (needed it)

74.  Rafael Palmeiro

I had to show off both the McGwire in this pack and the Sosa in the previous pack since those were my favorite base cards in each pack.  As for the rest of pack 2, getting another pair of needed cards keeps me on track to complete the set (and thus happy)!

I'll have more from this box soon.  Despite the relatively small number of cards in each pack (only six) it sure seems like I end up with a lot of scanning to do!

  1. Awesome photography! It doesn't sound like each pack came with one of those fold out posters that came in the 1998 packs. If so... that's a shame, because they were pretty cool.
