TCDB Weekly Recap - Post #2 of ??

Yesterday, I highlighted the first batch of TCDB trades that rolled into my mailbox last week.  Today, I'm back with even more baseball cards!

Let's begin with a four-card PWE from user SFC Temple.  In this swap, I turned a few Noah Syndergaard cards (plus a Jacob deGrom card) into four cards that I needed from the 1999 Pacific set.

I feel like I've been trading for 1999 Pacific cards for months now on TCDB...but finally that set is nearing completion.  I do hope to finish it all of prior to the end of this year...and I can virtually guarantee that this won't be the last you see of this particular set - both in terms of today's post but also moving forward!

Shifting away from set needs, how about a bunch of new-to-me Barry Larkin cards?  Well, I hope that sounds good because that's what I was able to acquire in a swap with user nwcardsupplies.

Lots and lots of good stuff there but my favorite card is probably that Prime Leather card from 1996 Ultra.  The card has a neat "sandy" texture to it - I suppose Fleer was going for a leather-y feel (which they missed the mark on) but I do like that the card does at least truly feel different...that's what you want from an insert, after all!

Next, from user George Hayes comes a PWE with needed cards for a couple of set builds.

I actually just traded away the silver signature version of that Mark Grace card in a different swap...I needed the "regular" version for my set build!  The other two cards are Headliners inserts from the awesome 1999 Fleer Sports Illustrated set.

Note:  If you are someone with a mind like a steel trap, you may recall me showing off that same Headliners card of Ken Griffey, Jr. a week ago.  That's because somehow I managed to trade for two copies of the card...whoops!  One copy is now tucked away in my binder but I've listed the other Griffey back on TCDB...maybe I can turn that into the last couple of Headliners that I do actually need!

Up next, an envelope from andersonadams1:

What can I say, I told you we'd see more from 1999 Pacific before the post was done.  You were warned.  Seriously though, I'm not sure why I ever thought that going after 1999 Pacific was a good idea...clearly I was missing way too many cards from that particular set!  Luckily, sites like TCDB exist (and equally lucky, 1999 Pacific doesn't seem to be particularly rare or difficult to trade for)!

Want to see more 1999 Pacific?  Good because I got one of the image variation cards from that set in a one-for-one swap with user travis_january.

I don't believe that image variation cards are any rarer than any of the other base cards.  Also, whoever thought "head shots" make for an interesting image variation probably shouldn't be designing baseball card sets.  I'm calling that now.

Shifting gears for a moment, my next trade netted me a card from a set that I haven't shown on the blog for quite some time - 2009 Topps American Heritage.

That's ol' Abe from the American Presidents insert set.  I have barely made any progress on this set since it was released over a decade ago...but like I've said many, many times before:  I'm nothing if not stubborn!

Do you have any cards from that set lying in a box, unloved and unwanted?  If so, maybe you happen to have something I could use:

2009 Topps American Heritage:
Base: 127, 132, 137, 143, 144, 147, 149, 150
Presidents: AP1, AP5, AP7, AP8, AP9, AP10, AP12, AP13, AP14, AP15, AP17, AP18, AP19, AP20, AP22, AP23, AP24, AP25, AP27, AP28, AP30, AP31, AP32, AP33, AP34, AP35, AP36, AP39, AP41, AP42, AP43

Like I said, I've got a ways to go with that set yet!

Keeping the mail flowing, my next envelope (from user mcgral) also held a single card - but this time it's an "oddball" Barry Larkin card.

That's a 1991 Pepsi card - a set that I know nothing about at the moment so I'll definitely have to try and do a little research prior to writing the corresponding Barry Larkin Collection post for this card.

Still working my way through the PWEs...

Next, from user rl16 comes my second Mark McGwire card of this post!

That's one of the 1999 Pacific Aurora cards that I needed - another set that I'm finally nearly done collecting!  In this case, user rl16 is a huge Cardinals fan so the trade was almost assuredly me taking one of his many unwanted duplicate Cardinals off of his hands (in exchange, I sent him a Lou Brock card so his net gain of Cardinals cards was still +0).

And yes, it does feel a little dirty to work a trade where the only card I'm getting in return is a Cardinal...but that's the plight of a Reds' fan who is a set collector!

Let's wash the stink of the Cardinals off of us with a new Barry Larkin card - this one from user stdolan1.

That's a 1996 Circa insert and it's actually a "fold-out" card.  The front design looks a lot like 1995 Fleer but don't let that scare you off - this is a nice little insert.  I'll definitely have a lot more to say about this card whenever I get around to featuring it in my ongoing Barry Larkin Collection series!

Sticking with the Larkin theme - another single card PWE (this time from user mastodon) netted me this 1990 Kahn's card of Barry.

The Kahn's cards were stadium giveaways - and seeing as how I live about 10 hours away from Cincinnati, it's safe to say that I don't make it there often (three times in my life...and not one of those games was a baseball card giveaway).  Thus, trading is my best option to try and acquire such oddballs!

And the last one for today...this being from user Dtd500:

That's a black bordered Jay Bruce mini from the 2012 A&G set.  In 2012, I thought it'd be fun to try and collect the four "common" versions of minis for each of the Reds in the set (regular, ad back, black border, and retail-only gold).  Now that it's the year 2021 and I still haven't finished acquiring those 2012 minis, the idea is a lot less fun...but hey, I made some progress this week so that's good!

Believe it or not, two posts full of TCDB trades and I'm still not done showing off this week's haul.  I have three more envelopes to show...and none of the remaining three are of the tiny PWE variety!  More later this week.

Comments

  1. Love the 2009 Topps American Heritage set. Don't have any of the short prints or President cards... but I did purchase the base set off of eBay.

  2. I really like the image on that Mark Grace card, never seen it before!
