Sportlots vs. COMC vs. eBay

Last week, I made a couple of small orders over on Sportlots to knock a few things off of my want list.  The first of those orders recently arrived and with it comes three needed mini cards from various 2022 Topps Allen & Ginter sets.

With these three cards in hand, I now can say that both the Baseball Lexicon set and the Bearing Fruit set are complete!  Nice to find a single seller who had multiple cards I needed.  Unfortunately, this could have been an even happier tale because the seller had a fourth mini that I needed (and tried to buy) to finish off another set, but alas, when the cards arrived I was refunded for that particular card and so here we are.  Even with that bit of a downer, getting three needed minis and finishing off two different sets is a solid mail day!

Getting back to the cancelled card, do those of you who use Sportlots find that to be a common occurrence?  You buy a card that is listed as in stock and then seller doesn't ship it?  I don't buy a ton from Sportlots but I've had that happen to me multiple times lately.  It's extra frustrating considering how shipping on the site works (the seller above had a set price for 1-4 cards so I attempted to buy exactly four cards from them).  If I had known that the one mini wasn't available, I would have probably picked out a different fourth card to purchase.

I've never had that sort of thing happen on eBay or COMC - what I order there is what I get.  That said, I usually find prices on COMC to be higher than Sportlots (at least for a lot of what I collect) and prices on eBay fluctuate so much that it's kind of all luck over there.

My question for anyone reading this is:  What online card marketplace do you use the most and/or have the most luck with?  Do you find one site to be much better than others (am I missing any sites that I should check out)?

  1. I always assume that one card will be faulty with larger sportlots orders. Very frustrating when it's 25% of the order though. I very much prefer COMC but that's only when I'm okay building a pile and letting it sit for months. I've never had a problem with them and sort of expect things to be perfect there.

Ebay and Sportlots are more for when I want things fast. Ebay for weird things and occasional deals. Sportlots for knocking out a handful of commons for a buck or so. I've definitely had my share of problems with ebay sellers having stuff not be in stock too. Those are even more frustrating since oftentimes I only buy things so I can combine shipping.

  2. That is annoying. I've had it happen maybe twice, and like you, with a small order I usually find enough to maximize shipping.

  3. Yes I've had orders from Sportlots where one card and sometimes more were out of stock when the seller filled my order so they refunded for the missing card(s). It might be possible that they made an inventory error when adding the quantity of a particular card, or just that their storage system for their sales isn't well organized.. I don't recall this happening on Ebay for card orders, other things I've ordered yes on occasion.

Oddly I use Ebay most often I think.

COMC I find often times the prices are too high. On a tangent issue I have noticed on COMC if I order using a credit card vs COMC credit my order does not get recorded on my order history.

  4. I use COMC the most out of them. I only use eBay as a last resort and I've never used Sportslots before. I recently did start selling on eBay though, maybe that will result in more purchases there.

  5. It's happened to me on Sportlots a time or two, in fact it just did the other day. It wasn't a big card (the ones on Sportlots seldom are), so it didn't bother me much. I'm not a big 'maximize my shipping' guy. ... I split my buying up with all three outlets (plus a couple others on the side). Ebay is, by far, filled with the most annoying people. But it also has the greatest inventory.

  6. Yep, I too have had that happen, and I find it to be terribly annoying! It would be very if the sellers on there would tell you before they ship so that you could switch it out for something else, but for whatever reason, THEY NEVER DO!!!

  7. I buy more from SportLots than the others, though I've been selling on COMC (yep, prices are usually higher). My SpL buying usually starts when I find several cards from 1-3 sellers, then I search their inventories to fill out large orders. Sellers with tons of stock will occasionally miss one and refund you for it. Or like the last order I placed, I clicked on one twice, so it was fine to take one off. (If you're buying more than one copy - I'd put that in a note to them right after or as you're ordering.)

COMC is good for more obscure stuff if you can find it at good prices. SportLots is better for bulk singles where you don't have to see them first. eBay is better for lots/batches, esp. those "pick'em" types of listings.
