Welcome back to another edition of my Lookin' Back at Kickstarted Things. As with the previous six entries in this particular series, the idea here is for me to take stock of the various projects that I've backed on Kickstarter. In an ideal world, a closer examination of some of my previous choices will hopefully help me make smarter decisions moving forward on the site! As per my usual, I'm going to discuss three projects today beginning with Tiny Epic Dinosaurs. I'll give each project a grade from 1 to 10 as well to keep myself honest!
Prior to backing Tiny Epic Dinosaurs, I had never played any of the games in the Tiny Epic series. Since then, however, I've played a few different games in the series and of those games, I can safely say that Tiny Epic Dinosaurs is in my top two (the other being Tiny Epic Galaxies that I like a lot). I didn't have as much luck with Tiny Epic Dungeons and I actively disliked Tiny Epic Tactics when I tried that one out.
As for Tiny Epic Dinosaurs, it's a worker placement game where you are dinosaur ranchers raising a bunch of dinos. The game comes with tons of (you guessed it) tiny dinosaur meeples - and with a fairly quick playtime this is a game I can confidently recommend for those that want a fairly quick, fairly rules light worker placement game. This project gets an easy 10/10 for me.
Next up, I backed a project called On the Origin of Species Board Game.
This one is a bit tougher to grade because I bought it as a gift and I've never played the game - heck, I've never even seen what the components look like in person (I wrapped the game box up still sealed). This was a Christmas gift one year for my brother (he's a Biology professor) and he told me he played it and liked it. Other than that, I can't give you any more details... I guess I'll give this one a 10/10 as well - it was a gift and the recipient said they liked it.
For my third project today, I backed another game for myself with a dinosaur theme. This time, it's Dinoblivion - Conquer the Land of Dinosaurs.
This game is a deck builder - a genre of games that I generally enjoy quite a bit. I've only played this game once (and it was at the two player count though the game also has a solo mode which I really ought to try out sometime). Even worse, I played this a couple of years ago now so I honestly don't remember that much about it. That being said, my general impressions are positive and I think this one I ought to take of the shelf for a solo spin sometime in the near future! While I don't think I can give this one a perfect score (after all, that initial play obviously didn't wow me enough to bring this back to the table right away), I do think that this one was a success. I'll say 7/10 for Dinoblivion.
That'll do for today's post and as you can see, I joined Kickstarter right around the era of the dinosaur themed game! Unbelievably, there are still a couple more dino themed Kickstarter projects that I'll be showing off in future posts in this series...but I promise that not every game that I've backed since then has extinct creatures as the theme!
