TCDB Monday: Trading Season Begins!

TCDB Monday: Starting a New Set to Collect (from the 90s!)

That's right, as the post title says, I've decided to start collecting a new set.  Well, new to me I guess since the set in question is actually from 1997.  The set, you ask?  None other than the comic book-inspired Metal Universe from 1997.   This set is a goofy set with amusing "comic drawings" augmenting each player's photograph.  There's something fun and whimsical about the set - and really, what more reason do I need to decide to collect it?!

Back in my youth, I do remember buying a few packs of 1997 Metal Universe.  Unfortunately, I have mostly traded away many of those cards so I'm more or less starting from ground zero in the set build.  On the bright side, it's not a large set (only 250 cards total) so I'm optimistic I'll be able to acquire the full thing without too much hassle.

This past week, I added the set to my want list over on TCDB and then almost immediately swung a deal with TCDB user Castle Anthrax for a big chunk of cards from Metal Universe.  In total, I was able to acquire 24 cards in a nice, clean 24-for-24 base card swap!

I greatly enjoyed looking through the full batch of cards but I had to make special mention of my three favorite cards from the lot:

Mike Piazza with robot arms?  Yes please.  Craig Paquette trying to hit his way out of the mouth of some large beast?  Sure, why not?  Jaime Navarro skydiving and pitching at the same time?  Weird, in all of the best ways possible.  The one shame is that with the foilboard it is nearly impossible to get a good scan of any of the cards!

I haven't yet gotten my want list on my blog updated with my 1997 Metal Universe needs but I do have my want list over on TCDB completely up-to-date.

In addition to the above trade, I managed to complete one other swap last week which was a much smaller trade thanks to user hershey:

Yep, another 2024 Topps 1989 Topps Baseball 35th Anniversary Chrome card is now mine, mine, mine!  I was particularly happy to be able to get the Jeter card in a simple one-for-one 1989 Chrome swap - often Jeter is the last card I need for a set build but not this time!  As it stands now, here is what I'm still looking for from the Series 2 Chrome set:
2024 Topps Wants:
1989 Topps Baseball 35th Anniversary Chrome (Series 2):
2T89C- 17, 26, 29, 33, 36, 43, 47, 52, 65, 68, 69, 75, 76, 84, 90, 92, 97, 100

As for the Jeter card itself, kind of neat that Topps used a photo of a super young Jeter rather than the usual late-in-career shots that we usually get on Jeter cards these days.

That does it for last week's TCDB trades.  With work now in full force, my trading time has definitely taken a hit but that doesn't mean that I'm not trying when I get the chance!

  1. I liked Fleer Metal back in the 90's. Then I went through a phase where it was just a bit too much. I've grown to appreciate them more the past few years. I remember during the pandemic scouring my boxes looking for singles of Griffey, Jordan, and Kobe... because they were selling for big money. I'm guessing the hype has died down a little by now.
