Those of you who have been reading my blog for awhile will probably be aware that I host group breaks fairly often. I used to host them entirely on the blog, then more recently I moved to Facebook, and now I simply do everything over on my Discord. Overall, I enjoy the process of hosting group breaks but I rarely join in breaks outside of my own anymore.
You might wonder why and the answer is simple. Lately, I've decided that I'm not going to chase "random Reds" cards anymore. Yes, I'll still collect every Barry Larkin card I can get my grubby hands on, but I don't have the interest (or storage space) to collect every single Cincinnati Reds card out there. Thus, since most group breaks are team-focused, there isn't much incentive for me to join in breaks anymore unless the set has some Barry Larkin cards I could use.
That all said, there are other breaks out there and I did recently join in one such break. This particular break was a player break for 2024 Topps Allen & Ginter and bought in for the "player" Got the Itch. That's right, an entire insert set counted as a player in this particular break. I bought in the break over on eBay from a seller called Hobby Legends and I'll say I was super impressed with them overall. For starters, the cards I won arrived fairly quickly given how much the breakers had to sort but, more importantly, each card was packaged in its own toploader.
I was happy to get 12 Got the Itch cards out of the break (it was a three-case break). Unfortunately, I did land a number of duplicates - both within the break itself but also within my own collection. That said, I'm hoping to flip those duplicates for the last few cards that I need out of the set.
In addition to the cards I won, Hobby Legends also threw in a pack of 2024 Topps Holiday.
Of course, I had to rip that pack and here are the results:
Nothing Earth-shattering in there but still a fun inclusion. They also threw in a branded packs of penny sleeves which was pretty cool, I'll definitely be able to use those for my own group breaks in the future!
Overall, I had a positive group break experience and I would encourage anyone on the fence to give a group break a try (whether that be one I host or one hosted by someone else reputable).
