Board Game Friday! My 2024 Board Game Challenge Results!

At the start of 2024, I set up several board game challenges.  Now that 2024 is over, it's time to check back in and see how I made out!

#1:  500 Plays Challenge

The main challenge out of all the challenges was to play a total of 500 (in-person) board games.  Unfortunately, I fell just short of completing 484 different plays.  However, I'm still going to give myself full credit here because I played several games of Pokemon with my son and Magic with my youngest brother and I don't track either of those games despite them being in-person plays.

#2:  Alphabet Challenge

The goal here was to play a game that started with every letter of the alphabet (plus a game that starts with a number).  I knew I was unlikely to get all 27 spots filled (especially because I don't own a game that starts with V or X) so I said getting 20 or more would be a win.  In the end, I did even better than I could have imagined and got 24 of the 27 spots filled (my missing letters were V, X, and Y).

#3:  10x10 Challenge

The goal here was to play ten different games ten times each.  According to my BGStats app, the first ten games that met this criteria were:
  • Ticket to Ride:  Nordic Countries
  • Ticket to Ride:  Europe
  • King of Tokyo
  • Lost Ruins of Arnak
  • Bandido
  • Railroad Ink:  Deep Blue Edition
  • Kingdomino
  • Dungeons & Dragons:  Adventure Begins
  • The Quest for El Dorado
  • Zombie Dice
Quite the eclectic assortment of games, that's for sure!

#4:  Complete 150 Plays with my Son

My son loves having a challenge involving him and we ended up hitting 150 plays by the end of the summer.  He then added in a 100 Fall plays challenge (which we successfully completed) and then a 30 plays over the winter holidays challenge (which we also completed).  Clearly, I get to do most of my board gaming with my son!

Challenge 5:  Play 5 games from the year 2018
Challenge 6:  Play 5 games from the year 2019
Challenge 7:  Play 5 games from the year 2020
Challenge 8:  Play 5 games from the year 2021
Challenge 9:  Play 5 games from the year 2022
Challenge 10:  Play 5 games from the year 2023

I'll lump all of the above challenges together since the basic idea is the same.  I can report that I successfully completed all six of the above challenges!

Challenge 11:  Play Every Game in my Collection

This challenge I knew I wouldn't actually finish but I thought it might help me play more of the games that I own than maybe I would otherwise.  To that end, the challenge worked as I ended up playing 96 different games from my collection in 2024!

Challenge 12:  Play All of my Unplayed Games

This challenge is a subset of the previous challenge but here I only needed to focus on games I've never played before.  Of the 102 games in my collection that were marked as "unplayed," I got 27 of those to the table.  I should note that the 102 number was never fully accurate as I only started using the app to track my board game plays a few years ago.  Still, it's what I have to work with and so that was the goal to beat!  27 out of 102 games isn't bad when you consider that most of those games required me to learn a whole new set of rules!

Challenge 13:  A Solo Game 10x10

I quickly changed this goal to simply "Play 100 Solo Games" but either way I failed here.  I managed to play 27 solo games spread out across the year, nowhere near the goal of 100!

Challenge 14:  A 5x5 Challenge with My Son

Another success story.  The games my son picked were:
  • Keep the Heroes Out!
  • Ticket to Ride:  Europe
  • Kingdomino
  • Catapult Feud
  • Zombie Dice
We crushed this one fairly quickly!

Challenge 15:  H-Index Challenge

At the start of 2024, my H-Index was 14 which means that there were 14 games that I had played at least 14 times each.  By the time 2024 ended, my H-Index had reached 18!  That's a huge jump and one that I'm unlikely to ever surpass in the future (in terms of levels gained in a single year).

Overall, I had a great year of board gaming and here's hoping that 2025 can be as good!  I have set a few challenges for 2025 but I'll have to discuss those in a future post since today's post is already probably too long!
