For the first time in several months, I matched up for a trade in BGG's monthly board game math trade. I only ended up with one trade, but that's better than getting shut out!
Giving: Dorfromantik: The Board Game
Dorfromantik: The Board Game is the 2023 Spiel des Jahres Winner so I figured the game was worth a shot when I saw it at my local game store. The game is based on a video game (which I've never played) but basically, it's a super chill, cooperative tile-laying game where you simply try to beat your previous high score. There's no real "winning" or "losing," though if you get a high enough score you can then unlock new components to use in future playthroughs.
Unfortunately, neither my son nor my wife seemed to have any interest in playing the game again after our first attempt. Thus, this was a fairly easy choice to put up for trade and I'm glad to see the game go off to a home that will (hopefully) love it more than we did.
Receiving: Everdell: Collector's Edition
My youngest brother brought Everdell home a couple of years ago around Christmas so this is a game that I've played before. Everdell is a worker placement game with an adorable woodsy animal theme. The game is probably best known for the (obnoxiously) large cardboard tree that you have to assemble each time you play, but ignoring that, it's a fun game with plenty of interesting choices. I don't know whether this will be one of those games that I'll hang on to forever (after all, the worker placement genre is a crowded space) but it's definitely a game that I want to get to the table again soon as I forget a lot of the finer details from my lone play of the game a few years ago!
Overall, it was a solid Math Trade for January 2025. I still have a bunch of games that I've been unable to trade away but that's why there's always next month's Math Trade lurking as a spot to try again!
