Board Game Friday: August 2025 Board Game Arena Plays

My life revolves around the academic calendar, so August means "back to school."  Unfortunately, back to school means much, much less time for fun - especially board games!

Case in point, my online plays over on Board Game Arena were few and far between in August (at least as compared to previous months).  I managed to complete a mere 23 online games last month (for comparison, I played 73 games in July)!

Here's what I got to play:

The usual suspects maintained their spot at the top of my most-played list.  7 Wonders Duel is a great game on BGA (and one that is perfect for asynchronous play).  The Lost Ruins of Arnak is also great online, and combined those two games made up 13 of the 23 games I played!

On the bright side, I had a fairly good month of winning board games.  I tend to not put a ton of emphasis on winning (I enjoy the process of playing, though I do always try to win).  However, I'm not too proud to say that given the choice, I'd rather win than lose!  For August, I won 17 of the 23 games I played, good for about a 74% winning percentage!

I did manage to learn and play one new-to-me game:  Pentaquest.

This is a simple push your luck game about rolling dice (Yahtzee style) and attempting to make specific patterns with the values rolled.  I probably prefer the game over Yahtzee, but neither game moves the needle much (and I'm not going to go out and buy Pentaquest to own in physical form).  It's always fun for me to try new games, but they can't all be amazing!

There was one other game that I played for the first time on BGA:  Arboretum

Arboretum is a rather mean card game about planting trees.  I've played this many times in-person (and I own the physical game), but last month was the first time I attempted to play the game online.  It's perfectly fine online, but I tend do try to do a lot of card counting, and you can't really do that in asynchronous play.  Thus, while the game is undoubtedly great, I think it's best for physical play around a table!

That does it for the month of August.  I do think that my board game playing will slowly pick back up over the next few months, especially since my in-person plays are likely to take a big hit now that my son is back in school (he tends to be tired after a long day, and if he's tired, board games don't interest him much).  That's totally fair, but at least dad can play online to get his fix!
