TCDB Monday (Happy Labor Day)!

I imagine most of you reading this are off today in honor of Labor Day.  Unfortunately for me, my college doesn't close today, so I am in session teaching all day!  Then again, I just returned to work from a summer off, so I doubt too many of you are feeling bad for me.

No bad feelings here, instead, how about some good vibes?  More specifically, a good vibe trade that netted me a couple of needed cards from a 2001 set.

The two Topps Gold Label cards you see above are courtesy of a trade with TCDB user smitha1.  Both cards are part of the prospects short print subset, and each card is numbered out of 999.

As for the two featured players, let's see how Topps did in choosing the two prospects.

First, Paul Phillips, catcher for the Royals.

Paul played a total of 7 years MLB spread across stints with the Royals, White Sox, and Rockies.  According to BaseballReference, his career WAR was 0.5.  Phillips was actually drafted in three different MLB drafts:  He was drafted in the 59th round by the Royals in 1995, then in the 25th round by the Astros in 1996, and finally, the Royals selected him again (this time in the 9th round) in 1998.

The other prospect in this trade was Scott Heard, who, unfortunately, never made it to the big leagues.
In fact, he never got out of Single A+ leagues.  He only lasted as a professional ballplayer for four years, with all of his time spent in the low minors of the Rangers system.

I imagine that picking good prospects is a tough thing to do for card companies.  Unfortunately for collectors of the 2001 Gold Label set, the prospects were all short-printed, making them tough to acquire, whether or not the featured player was actually any good at the MLB level.

That's it for the past week on TCDB.  With the start of the semester, I knew trading would slow down some, however, I aim to keep at least a trickle of trades rolling in over the next couple of weeks!
