Board Game Friday: September 2025 Plays

October is here, and with another month now completed, it's time for my monthly boardgaming check-in.  September ended up being a solid month for me at the table. I managed to complete 76 plays spread across 17 different titles.

Here's the full graphic:

Of the 17 games, six were brand new to me.

Tiny Towns:  Okay, this one wasn't totally new as I had previously played it on Board Game Arena.  However, it was my first time playing the game in person, so close enough for this list!  Tiny Towns is a fun town builder, where one person selects a resource (colored cube) and then everyone has to put that resource on their 4x4 grid somewhere.  Then the next person chooses a resource (colored cube) and everyone has to put that cube on their grid somewhere.  The catch is that you can remove cubes from your grid and replace them with buildings (that score points) if you put the cubes in the correct arrangement.  I love the simultaneous play, and there's plenty of variety of buildings within the box.  Good stuff.

Soda Jerk:  A super small box game, Soda Jerk is a bluffing game about making fruit soda.  It's quick, definitely a filler game to take out when waiting for someone to arrive at a game night.

Santa Monica:  I had traded for this game a long time ago, but only last month did I finally get it to the table.  It's actually great, despite the rather drab look of the box cover!  A fun tablueu builder that we instantly ran back and played again (I generally don't play the same games back-to-back, so that's high praise).

Cyclades:  Legendary Edition:  Cyclades is a famous game, but one that I had never tried.  I will say that it quickly moved into the slot of my favorite "dudes on a map" game.  A simple ruleset coupled with a clever auction system means every turn is full of interesting decisions.

Super Fantasy Brawl:  I played this one as a two-vs-two team game, and I think that is where this game probably fits into my collection.  As a one-on-one brawler, I think it would simply be a much worse version of Unmatched, but Unmatched doesn't scale well for more players, so Super Fantasy Brawl will probably stick around in my collection based on player count alone!

Leaping Lions:  A ButtonShy 18-card wallet game, Leaping Lions is about creating a Malaysian lion dance.  I only played this one once (it's a two-player game), so I don't have a great feel for the longevity of the game yet.  That said, my first play was most positive, so hopefully I can try this one out again soon!

That does it for the month of September.  I love trying new games, so getting six such games to the table was awesome.  I also played some other favorites, including Lost Ruins of Arnak (I tried one of the new boards in the Adventure Chest), Quest for El Dorado (which I taught my son), and Circle the Wagons (another ButtonShy game that I love).

Here's to more gaming highlights in October 2025!
