Here we are at the end of November already, and yet I neglected to highlight my Board Game of the Month packages for the past three months!
The basic idea of the Board Game of the Month Club is that for a set price, you get a new game (plus typically two expansions) mailed to you each month by the Button Shy company. I love Button Shy's main gimmick for their games (small "wallet-sized" games with only 18 cards). I love the variety of the games and themes, and I also love that the games take up almost no room on my board game shelves! If there was ever a company to receive a board game from every single month, it'd be Button Shy.
Without further ado, let's dig into each month's haul, beginning with September 2025:
Contents for September were:
- Converge: Bastions of Tradition
- Converge: Keepers of Order
- Aqua ROVE: Risky Reefs
Converge: Bastions of Tradition is a 2-player game that has a rather unique premise. The game Converge can be played using any 3 Skillset Decks from any Converge game. Bastions of Tradition comes with three Skillset Decks, but there are many more expansions for Converge (many of which were actually released back in 2023). Unfortunately, I've yet to have the time to learn and play Converge, so I can't currently give any feedback as to whether it will be worth trying to track down some of the older content for the game. I can say that this is a game that I should be able to get played soon, since the September Board Game of the Month package also included Converge: Keepers of Order expansion, which is a solo mode for Converge!
The other included expansion in the September package was Risky Reefs for Aqua ROVE. Unfortunately, I don't own the base Aqua ROVE game, so I can't play Risky Reefs. Interestingly enough, I was actually a playtester for a different Aqua ROVE expansion (Dreadful Depths) a few months back, so while I can't play the official copy, I have played an earlier version of the game (it'll be interesting to compare how the playtest version changed as compared to the final, printed version)!
Moving on to October, I was once again sent a full game plus a couple of expansions.
Contents for October were:
- Shallow Regrets
- Shallow Regrets: The Fisher & The Frod
- Shallow Regrets: Lingering Remorse
- (empty) Aqua ROVE Expansion Collection Wallet
The empty wallet was a strange inclusion, though I suppose if I had more Aqua ROVE content, then I'd be happy to have the wallet. As it stands now, I do have the Risky Reefs expansion from September, so at least I have a wallet to stick that in.
As for the main game, Shallow Regrets, I can inform you that the game is great! This is another 2-player game, and it plays super quick. In Shallow Regrets, you are fishing for (hopefully) high-scoring fish, all the while trying to avoid negative foul fish. There is a fair bit of "take that" in the game, but it's over quickly enough that it never truly feels bad, even if your best fish gets stolen from you. I will say that my son and I loved Shallow Regrets, but we both feel that the Lingering Remorse expansion (which simply adds six more fish cards) is an almost necessary addition to add a little more meat to the bones of the game. The October package also included the Fisher & the Frod, which is a solo expansion for Shallow Regrets. Unfortunately, I can't comment on the quality of that yet since I haven't tried the solo mode for Shallow Regrets.
Finally, we've made it to the November Board Game of the Month package:
The package for the month of November included:
- Lands of Amazement
- Lands of Amazement: Family Fun
- Lands of Amazerment: Restorations
- Aqua ROVE: Dreadful Depths
Another Aqua ROVE expansion, so more cards for that empty wallet from October's package. Of note, Dreadful Depths is the expansion that I got to playtest a bit prior to its publication. I still need to order myself the main Aqua ROVE game, how else can I enjoy the two expansions from the past couple of months?!
The main highlight, however, is all of the Lands of Amazement content. That game is a solo game with an amusement park theme. It's one that I've yet to try, but one that I've been looking forward to ever since I heard of it!
Overall, it was a solid three months of board game content. Shallow Regrets was a true hit in my household, and I expect that Lands of Amazement will be a great solo puzzle (amusement park games always seem to appeal to me). I plan to continue on with the Button Shy Board Game of the Month Club for the foreseeable future, or at least as long as the club keeps providing me with new and interesting games to play!
