Long-time blog readers will know that I love all things Allen & Ginter. Yes, of course, that means the modern version of the brand that Topps publishes each year, but it also means going all the way back to the late 1800s for the original cigarette sets!
I've already built one set from back then (the 1889 50 Fish from American Waters set). Currently, I'm working on two more sets from that era: the 1887 Flags of All Nations set and the 1888 City Flags set. Of the two, I'm much closer to completing the City Flags set - and as of today, I'm one card closer yet!
That's Rouen, a city in France that was the seat of the Exchequer of Normandy during the Middle Ages. With Rouen now tucked away in my set binder, I'm down to needing only two more cards from this set before I'll be able to call it complete:
Allen & Ginter City Flags (N6) Wants:
- Nice
- Saint-Etienne
Several years ago, I would have said you'd be crazy if you thought I could build an original 1800s-era Allen & Ginter set. And yet, here we are with me only two cards away from having built two such sets! Wouldn't it be nice if I could find the last two City Flags cards by this time next year? I think that should be a personal goal of mine for 2026.
Hey, a guy can dream, right?!
