Board Game Friday: Button Shy Board Game of the Month Club (December 2025 and January 2026)

In the middle of last month, I received my latest Board Game of the Month package from Button Shy Games.  This particular envelope held two months' worth of games, so I've got double the fun to display today!

First, from December 2025:

  • Embers
  • Embers:  The New Guard
  • Adventurous:  Grand Expeditions

I haven't yet tried Embers, but from what I can tell, it is a solo survival game.  I haven't ever played a solo game quite like that, so I'm excited to give it a spin.  The New Guard expansion for the game adds in a few more cards (as most Button Shy expansions tend to do).  And speaking of expansions, the Grand Expeditions game is an expansion for Adventurous, a game that I have played a few times now (and quite enjoy).  I'm quite happy with the December haul!

Next, from January 2026:

  • Phantasmic
  • Phantasmic:  Necromancy
  • Apropos of Board Games:  Table Talk - Starter
  • Apropos of Movies:  Movie Magic - Starter

Phantasmic is a 2-3 player bluffing game about casting spells.  I'll be honest, I don't have high hopes for this one, but I'm certainly willing to give it a chance.  The gameplay looks rather simplistic, but that's not always a bad thing.  The other two games (Apropos of Board Games and Apropos of Movies) are party games that I think Button Shy will be adding to as the year goes along.  I'm terrible with coming up with names of movies (I don't really watch movies much anymore), so that game is tough for me.  On the other hand, my wife doesn't play much in the way of board games, so that game is tough for her.  As it stands, both games are fine (I've played each one once), but either I'm not the target audience (movie lovers), or I don't have someone to play with who is the target audience (board gamers).

That does it for the Button Shy Board Game of the Month Club for the past couple of months.  I am hoping that the packages start arriving monthly again, it kind of defeats the purpose to have a monthly board game club send out packages every other month!
