Recently, Crocodile Sports Cards posted about a set of tobacco cards that I had never heard of: the 1938 "The Sea Shore" set by W.D. & H.O. Wills. Well, as someone who has already collected the 1889 Allen & Ginter fish set, the Sea Shore set seemed like a perfect fit for my collection. As Crocodile noted in his blog post, the Willis sets don't command a high price tag, and so for the price of less than a blaster (including shipping), I'm now the proud owner of my own copy of the 1938 Sea Shore set!
I love the vibrant colors on the cards, I mean, just look at this Smooth Blenny. What a beautiful-looking card!
Another place where this set outdoes the A&G fish set is with the card backs. I mean, just look at the wonderful paragraph full of information about the subject of the card.
If you read the fine print at the top of the card back, you'll see that the card surfaces are actually adhesive. These cards are basically fancy stamps meant to be placed in an album. With that being the case, the cards themselves are super flimsy (that's really my only complaint about the set).
Crocodile scanned the full set in his post, but I'd be remiss if I didn't at least show off a couple of my favorites in all their full color glory!
I'm super excited to own this vintage set, and a big thanks to Crocodile for alerting me to the set's existence! The only downside? Looking at all that delicious seafood is making me hungry.
