Barry Larkin Collection 248: 1990 Topps Glossy Send-Ins All-Star - #5

Barry Larkin
Year:  1990
Brand:  Topps
Insert set:  Glossy Send-Ins All-Star
Card number:  5

In 1990, the Topps Glossy All-Star set was available only as a mail-in promotion.  According to baseballcardpedia:
This 60-card set was available by mailing in the special offer cards found in 1990 Topps wax packs. With enough special offer cards, and a nominal shipping & handling fee, collectors could choose one of six different "series" of Glossies, with two cards per series (cards ending in 9 and 0) featuring a "young star." The design of the set is identical to previous year's Glossies, except for a thin, red, border.
It's a rather interesting concept, though the actual card design is quite dull if I'm being honest.  No team logos, a barely visible player name on the front, and absolutely no statistics or write-ups on the back.  On the other hand, I have to imagine that this card is fairly rare (at least in terms of "junk wax" era cards) since you had to request the cards via the postal service.  For that reason alone, this is a nice addition to my Barry Larkin Collection (and it also marks the 19th different Barry Larkin card that I own from the year 1990 - the year the Reds ended up winning the World Series)!
