Reds Make a Trade - but Why?

On Friday, June 26 the Cincinnati Reds traded outfielder Norris Hopper to the Chicago White Sox for catcher Corky Miller.

For the White Sox, they get rid of a catcher who barely hits his own weight in the minors (hitting .205 this year) and gain an outfielder who has a little speed. For the Reds, well, they gain another catcher which I suppose means they can have three catchers on the roster again like they did all of last year...and we all know how well that turned out.

Seriously, this particular trade makes no sense to me. Corky Miller simply isn't a good backup...or even a backup to a backup. Norris Hopper on the other hand, while not a spectacular player, isn't nearly as useless...and with Willy Taveras currently holding down the leadoff spot for the Reds despite hitting 0.085 since May 15th, I don't believe that Hopper could have been any worse...

Now, perhaps another trade is in the works. If so, there is only one player that makes sense - Ramon Hernandez, the current Reds catcher. Perhaps the Reds are planning to jetison Ramon to some team needing a catcher ( Brewers, Dodgers?) for an outfielder who can actually hit the ball... If so, I'll be satisfied...but I'm certainly not about to hold my breath waiting for such a logical move to be made by Reds' management, that's for sure.

i believe the Reds backup catcher in AAA is injured, so Corky is needed to fill in the there.

  2. Hmm, I wasn't aware of that. Even so, I can't believe they couldn't have done better elsewhere...or just call up a catcher from AA or something...

Normally this type of thing wouldn't be a big deal, but with Jocketty seemingly unwilling to do anything that NEEDS to be done (move Taveras out of the leadoff spot, acquire an outfielder who can actually hit, etc.) when something IS finally done I want it to be something that helps the big league team in some way. This, of course, does not.

I think Taveras is more Dusty then Jocketty, but it's clear that he's more of a 4th OF then a leadoff man, especially with Dickerson's performance lately and Drew Stubbs in AAA.

Plus, the move made room for Chris Heisey to be promoted to AAA, which is a gain over Hopper, I think.

It seems Jocketty is playing for 2010, which means this year will have more frustration and few moves.
