A TCDB Surprise Card from mpdillard25!

Group Break Update: Finishing Off the Box of Stadium Club (With a Nice Final Pack Surprise)!

Did I drive you group break participant fans crazy by throwing in a Barry Larkin Collection post earlier today?  Sorry about that - but I figured this post would be better served to be up during the evening hours since it contains a "bonus" hit of sorts...  Remember back when we pulled that Play at the Plate redemption card in the box and I said there was an outside chance we'd get another shot at one of the relics since they are seeded 1:10 packs (and the box holds 12 packs)?

Well, we got lucky!  The final pack of the box was holding a second Play at the Plate card...and this time it was a real card with real dirt in it (seriously).  Who got it?  You'll have to read on!

Pack 12:
1.  Nomar Garciaparra - Red Sox

I always enjoy seeing who Topps puts as #1 in the set.  I think Nomar was probably a worthy choice for the time, but I'm not sure that decision has held up over time!
22.  Jeromy Burnitz - Brewers
26.  Eric Karros - Dodgers
40.  Jim Thome - Indians

This is pretty much cardboard perfection - what an awesome card!  I've been really impressed with much of the 2001 Stadium Club set...so much so that there's a good chance I'll try to pick up a box of this stuff for myself and then collect the full base set!
47.  Ray Durham - White Sox
48.  Dean Palmer - Tigers
51.  Tom Glavine - Braves
53.  Jose Canseco - Yankees
56.  Bob Abreu - Phillies
62.  Doug Glanville - Phillies
91.  Carlos Feebles - Royals
95.  Mike Mussina - Orioles
109.  Mike Williams - Pirates

In most packs, this would be an easy choice for "best image" but I think in this pack the Thome still beats it.  Even so, there's no shame in second here...another awesome card!
113.  Vinny Castilla - Rays
147.  Eric Young - Cubs
187.  J.R. House - Pirates
PP8.  Play at the Plate relic:  Alex Rodriguez - Mariners

As you can see, the Play at the Plate relic comes with a protective wrapper over the card portion (but not over the see-through dirt window!  The card states that the dirt is "game-used batter's box dirt."  Certainly different - and a bit odd - hopefully Chris likes this one!

The backside of the relic has a nice little write-up (and this was back before most people hated A-Rod so that's worth mentioning as well).

I'm glad we lucked out with a box with two relics since the first one was a crappy redemption.  While I understand redemptions, I think the hobby population in general wouldn't mind them as much if they were only inserted as "bonus hits" rather than as the promised hit(s).  In that way, if you buy an older box you'll still be guaranteed to get your promised relics & autos (which group break participants often look forward to)!  No harm, no foul here though - and a great way to end the third box of the break.  At this point, we have two more boxes to go - each with only two packs remaining.  Stay tuned...and then start checking your mailboxes as I hope to mail everything before the week is up!
