If Only I Had a Nickel for Each Time I Say: "Of Course, It Had to Be Jeter."

Loyal readers will probably be borderline (?) sick of me saying that I've declared 2021 to be the "year of the completed set" but that's worth repeating once again!  You see, today's post is a eBay purchase from the seller Check Out My Cards (i.e. the same COMC website that's about three or four months behind on shipping out cards that you order directly from them).  Somehow, they manage to get eBay sales out in a more reasonable time (about two weeks in my case if I recall correctly).

I took the time to go through my want list a bit and grab a few of the cheaper cards that COMC was offering up on eBay.  How many sets did I complete?  Let's find out!

Beginning with the oldest set purchases, this is the last of the 1999 Fleer Sports Illustrated Headliners insert cards that I needed:

And yes, of course it had to be Derek Jeter.  Apparently no one likes to trade Mr. Jeter away, I swear he's the last card I need in the majority of the late 90s sets that I've collected.  As for more modern sets, I'd say it's now Mike Trout who is often the last player I need (see my 2013 Topps Archives Gallery of Heroes want list for proof of that).

Next up, from the year 2006 comes one more of the Nickname Greats inserts from the Fleer Greats of the Game set.

I'm still missing a bunch of these:
2006 Fleer Greats of the Game Wants:
Nickname Greats: AG, AT, CF, GS, KH, LP, MF, MR, MW, RC, RG
Not a complete set (at least not yet) but always happy to chip away whenever I can!

Late summer is typically Ginter mania for me - and this year is no exception.  With the high prices of cards these days, I could only afford a few boxes of 2021 Topps Allen & Ginter BUT I do have some other new-to-me Ginter cards to show off...and they are only a little over a decade old at this point!

Those are two of the Celestial Stars mini cards that I still needed.  This is another set that isn't finished yet but again, making progress is what it's about at first!
2010 Allen & Ginter Wants:
Celestial Stars:  CS 3, 4, 5, 11
We stick with the year 2010 but move on to a set that I like much, much less than Ginter - and obviously I'm not alone as the set was a one-and-done from Topps.  That set is 2010 Topps National Chicle.

Two more short prints in the books - only eight more cards needed before I can knock this set off of my list for good...and forever.
2010 Topps National Chicle Wants:
Base:  287, 296, 299, 302, 303, 308, 311, 317
Moving up one year to 2011, we find a 2011 Topps Archives 1975 mini parallel.

This is the last mini parallel that I need for my set - though here I should note that I am only collecting the various Reds parallels from the 2011 Archives set.  Still, chalk this one up as another set off of my want list!

Finally, last but not least, the newest set that I bought cards of:

Those are four of the short prints out of the 2018 Topps Gypsy Queen.  Like many of the sets that I chipped away at with this COMC purchase, I'm still not done with the '18 GQ set.  However, having the above four cards in my set binder means I'm now only missing five cards before this set can also join the completed set list!
2018 Topps Gypsy Queen Wants:
Base:  301, 303, 306, 307, 318
Overall, I managed to knock two more sets off of my want list and chip away at a number of others.  As far as set collecting in 2021 goes, I've now completed a whopping 32 sets this year!!

Like I keep saying, it's "the year of the completed set."

  1. I had no memory of Cliff Lee every being a Mariner. I'll blame Nick for not putting him on the Mariners Short-Term Stops team (only 13 games!).

  2. I literally put "of course" after every Jeter entry in my want lists. And there are 27 right now. And that's after I found like 10 of them in a box of just Jeters at the National.
You're right about Trout too. If it's not him then it's Ohtani or Tatis...always the hyped guy, never the second string common Mariner guy that you're missing. (No offense Seattle.)

  3. I'm happy to see you keep making good progress on completing those sets!
