About a week ago, we had our SLOCON league fantasy baseball draft - a league in which I've been both quite good and quite horrible over the years. Last year, my team was decimated by injuries early and never could quite recover which led me to a 9th place finish (out of 16 teams). Even worse, the top 8 teams make the playoffs - and I missed out by half a game in 2021. Of course, I have to give a shoutout to Tom (from Waiting 'til Next Year) for winning the league last year (and his third place finish the year before). I've been in the league since 2012 and I still haven't won it all!
I greatly enjoy playing in the league - both because the managers within the league are all super active but also because the league has plenty of other fun "perks" including a podcast that I got to be part of recently (this one was recorded prior to our league draft but we talk about both fantasy baseball and our thoughts on real baseball including many of the big trades and signings of the offseason). Give it listen and let me know what you think, I'm finding that I enjoy podcasting quite a bit!
A few days after recording the podcast, we had our fantasy draft where I did end up selecting Mookie Betts with my first pick. I won't bother you with the round-by-round breakdown but here's my squad heading into the first week of the season:
I'd love to hear your thoughts on my choices as well - can this team finish in the top half of the league? I know that the Yahoo! projections at the end of the draft didn't think I did well (I believe I was ranked 15th of 16).
No matter what happens, I'm simply happy to have baseball back for another year. I've got my first baseball game lined up to go to (a Blue Jays/Reds game in May) and now I've got a fantasy baseball team to keep track of as well. It's probably too much to ask for my Reds to finish higher than 4th place this year but I'll try not to let that ruin my summer overall!

I played fantasy baseball one year... and it almost drove me nuts. I can see how a diehard baseball fan would love it, but I just didn't have time to tinker with my lineups. The one good thing that came out of it was I followed my players and the league's free agents closely... which brought me closer to the game.
ReplyDeleteSince you mentioned playoffs, I assume that this is an H2H league. If so, I like your offense, particularly for a 16-team league. There's a ton of upside in that lineup and enough flexibility to cover a few of the younger guys if they don't break out. I typically go floor over ceiling with early picks, but also took Bobby Witt 2.0 when he slid in my 10-team league, so having him go off would be nice to see. The pitching side definitely feels like it is a bit more volatile, although I thought that was the case across the board this year. Six starting spots might be the fewest that I have seen in a league, particularly one that includes holds and QS as categories.
ReplyDeleteI also have Travis as my Catcher. I chuckled when I saw d'Arnaud on your team because I drafted live and kept not seeing an available Catcher when it was my turn to draft, so he was the best catcher available in like the second to last round. We changed formats from Rotisserie to Head to Head this year because my kid seemed to lose interest a quarter into the season so I figure maybe the Head to Head format will entertain him more.
