Barry Larkin
Year: 1993
Brand: Upper Deck
Parallel set: Gold hologram
Card number: 473
Collectors buying full factory sets of 1993 Upper Deck could get lucky and find the one-per-case set with gold holograms. Unfortunately, there was no way to know if the set had the gold holograms until you opened it up. The above "Red October" team card is from a set that someone must have broken up at some point in time. Luckily for me, I've now acquired both gold hologram versions of the two Barry Larkin cards in 1993 Upper Deck (the other one I featured almost two years ago on the blog).
I still maintain that changing only the foil of the hologram on the back of the card makes for a stupid parallel to track down...and yet, here I am doing exactly that! I've said it before and I'll say it again, maybe I'm the stupid one here!
I used to think these parallels were silly too... but I actually think it was kind of creative on Upper Deck's part. Considering that parallels were only in its infancy stage (compared to what we're dealing with these days), I like the idea that collectors were encouraged to open up their factory sets to check to see if they had the parallel version. The gold hologram might be a silly parallel in itself... but at least UD was thinking outside of the box.
