Board Game Friday: The 5-4-3-2-1 Challenge

Today, I thought it would be fun to share my answers to one of the Instagram-related board game challenges that has been making the rounds.  Specifically, the 54321 Challenge.  The advantage of the blog (as compared to Instagram) is that I can expand upon my selections more than the social media platform allows.

5:  The 5 Board Games I Love

The hardest part for #5 was narrowing down the list of games I love!  Lost Ruins of Arnak is still one of my favorite games to play both virtually and in person, so that was an easy decision.  After that, things got tougher!  In the end, I went with a variety of game types and weights.  Slay the Spire and Keep the Heroes Out! are both cooperative deck builders, each unique in their own right.  Arboretum is a simple card game full of tough choices.  Finally, Ark Nova is a zoo builder game with a ton of cards and possible interactions.

4:  The 4 Games I Want to Play

Too Many Bones is a huge box (before you even consider the many expansions), so I don't think I have room for it in my collection.  That said, the game looks fun so I'd like to try it someday!  Aqua Garden is a game that I only recently learned about, I believe it's coming back to Kickstarter soon so maybe I'll get that one eventually.  Civolution and Wondrous Creatures both fall into the category of "need to try before I buy."

3:  The 3 Board Games I Always Recommend

More favorite games of mine, though all three of these are on the lighter side (which makes them great recommendations to people newer to the hobby).  The Quest for El Dorado is a fun race game with a deck-building component.  7 Wonders Duel is a great two-player-only game (and much, much better than the parent "7 Wonders" game).  Harmonies is a beautiful game where you draft and play tiles, trying to make certain patterns while simultaneously satisfying multiple scoring criteria.  All three games are fairly easy to explain, and after a play or two, you start to learn some of the depth and intricacies of each (the surest way to get someone addicted to board games)!

2:  The 2 Board Games I Most Recently Played

My family and I recently returned from a vacation (we took a cruise to Alaska), and the two games you see above were games I brought along on our trip.  Next Station London is a fun flip-and-write game, while Circle the Wagons is a two-player-only game in the vein of Sprawlopolis (build a tableau to satisfy varying scoring conditions each game).  I recommend both games!

1:  The 1 Game I am Playing Next

Habitats is a game that I recently traded for, but I've yet to get it to the table.  I do think this is a game that my son will enjoy, but to be sure, I still need to read the rules!

That's it for my 54321 Challenge for board games!  I think I am going to come up with a similar concept for baseball cards next week, stay tuned for that (and hopefully some of you will play along as well once I get that post written)!
