Somehow, it is now August. August signals the end of my summer vacation, and with that, the end of lots of free time to play board games online. Don't get me wrong, I'll still try to play as many games as possible once work starts back up, but it's certainly easier to play games during the summer months! Case in point: The month of July saw me complete 73 different games over on Board Game Arena. My winning percentage wasn't great (I won 23 games, good for only a 31.5% win rate). That said, it's worth noting that a lot of my plays were with more than two people, so I'll say I wasn't too far off from "average."
Of course, for me, the real fun is in the playing of the game more so than simply "winning." Sure, I play to win, but I'd much rather play ten games and lose all ten than play only one game that I win. That might make me weird, but it also keeps me returning to Board Game Arena and trying new games!
Speaking of the games, here's the full list of my July plays:
For the month, most of my plays were from the usual suspects (7 Wonders Duel, Ark Nova, and Lost Ruins of Arnak). However, I did play two new games on the website.
First up, Flip 7.
Flip 7 is a simple card game with a fun press-your-luck element. My son loves this game, and after a couple of plays, I decided that this was a game that would be great for my Mathematics of Games and Gambling course that I'm teaching this fall. In a wonderful turn of events, the publisher of Flip 7 ended up reaching out to me and donated several copies of the game for my class!
My other new game was only new in the sense that I played it online for the first time. That game is Lost Cities.
Lost Cities is a two-player-only set collection game. It's quick, but it packs surprisingly tough decisions within a drop-dead simple rule set.
I highly recommend both Flip 7 and Lost Cities if you are looking for simple, yet quite fun, games. Flip 7 is more of a party game, while Lost Cities is a bit of a thinkier game for two people. No matter which game you choose, you'll probably have fun!
That does it for July over on BGA. As I said at the top of the post, I don't expect my August plays to match my July numbers. However, I guess I do have another week or two before work officially begins back up, so who knows, maybe I can sneak in a large number of virtual plays before then!
