A Random Pack of Cardboard Rip for a Monday!

Happy Monday, everyone.  We are now about halfway through the month of October, and I'm glad about that.  I tend to dislike the end of summer (and while fall is "fine", fall here now means winter will be here before you know it, and winter is most definitely not fine).

Speaking of things I don't much care for, I've been waiting on a pair of TCDB trades to arrive for a few weeks now, and still no sight of them.  The one is coming from Japan (I think), so that one has an excuse at least.  Anyhow, since I have no new cards from trading to show off, I figured I would dip into my ever-shrinking "pack stash" and rip a random pack of cards today.

Today's choice is a pack of Fleer Ultra from 2006.

The year 2006 was smack dab in my collecting "dead zone."  I had just graduated from college in '05, and was firmly in graduate school by '06.  I had no time, and perhaps equally importantly, no money to spend on cards back then!

I have no illusions that I'll suddenly decide to collect the 2006 Ultra set, but ripping packs is always fun, so let's see what this one has been holding inside its wrapper for nearly 20 years.

With only five cards per pack, why not scan them all?  Here they are in the order they arrived in the pack:

55.  Luis Gonzalez

A perfectly solid photograph, though I can't help but wonder who the blond-haired dude is with the half-unbuttoned shirt in the background.

153.  Angel Berroa

Ultra was always Fleer's answer to Topps Stadium Club, at least in terms of the quality of images (and borderless card design most years).  This Berroa card is nice-looking. I love a good action shot.

97.  Ryan Zimmerman

Hey, a solid rookie card pull from 2006!  The DC jersey for the Nationals certainly looks patriotic.  I wonder how many people in Washington at the time would have believed how Washington would be today (and I'm not talking about the baseball team at this point).

Strikeout Kings
SOK6.  Chris Carpenter

Each pack of Fleer Ultra promises one insert; this Carpenter Cardinals card is mine (clearly, this pack wasn't meant for me).

Gold Medallion
79.  Raul Ibanez

According to TCDB, Gold Medallion cards were also seeded one per pack.  That means, of the five cards in a pack, two are non-base (one insert, one Gold Medallion).  Ugh, it's just as well I wasn't collecting in 2006.  As a set collector at heart, having 40% of a pack be non-base hurts my heart.

Well, that does it for the random pack for the week.  I guess it was fine, though none of the cards were keepers for me personally.  That's alright, they'll be added to my free card giveaways that I try to do fairly regularly over on my Discord page (go here to sign up if you haven't already, lots of fun stuff on my Discord)!
